- The occurrence of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 in commercial dry dog foods in the city of Ibadan, Southwest Nigeria, was investigated. Dry dog food samples from 6 producers were purchased on five different occasions from retail outlets in Ibadan, Nigeria. High performance liquid chromatography was used for separation and quantification of aflatoxin fractions, after consideration of the limits of detection and quantification of the method. Results indicate that aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 were detected in all the samples investigated, with B1 being the most abundant. The range of concentration of total aflatoxins was 7.76 to 11.93 µg/kg (mean: 9.61 µg/kg). The results show that dry dog foods marketed in Ibadan are frequently contaminated with aflatoxins, exposing dogs to adverse effects of aflatoxicosis. Scientifically based regulations for the acceptable limit of mycotoxins in pet foods in the country would be beneficial. 3 results 3

- A study was conducted in Ibadan, South-West Nigeria between 2005 and 2009 to determine the prevalence, risk factors and management protocols employed in earfly bite wounds in dogs. Review of case records, physical examinations and administration of structured questionnaire were used to obtain information with regard to the number of cases of earfly bite wounds presented, signalment, anatomical features, treatment modalities and response. Prevalence of earfly bite wounds was 11.73%. Sex, breed, anatomical features and management exhibited significant influence on the incidence of earfly bite wounds. Effectiveness of management protocols was low with significantly high recurrence rate. The results showed a significantly high association between earfly bite wounds and aural hematoma and otitis externa. 2 results 2

- Background: Rearing of dogs and other pets has become increasingly popular in modem society. Bacterial flora resides within thè nasal and orai cavities of dogs and when chanced, can be pathogenic. Certain similarities between humans and dogs portends dangerous behavioral habits that could lead to zoonotic disease transmission. This study was aimed at isolation, identification and antibiotic profiling of bacteria from nasal swabs of apparently healthy dogs. The zoonotic risk was also considered. Methodology: A total of 173 nasal swabs were collected from 173 apparently healthy dogs. Structured questionnaires were administered to investigate human behavioral habits. Results: Two hundred and twenty two (222) bacterial isolates were obtained from thè culture with ten (10) potentially pathogenic bacteria in thè order of Escherichia coli (18.5%), Proteus species (17.1%), Staphylococcus aureus (14.0%), Klebsiella species (9.0%), Acinetobacter species (9.0%), coagulase negative Staphylococcus species (7.7%), Pseudomonas species (6.8%), Actinobacter species (6.8%), Citrobacter species (5.9%) and Streptococcus species (5.4%). Overall, thè Gram negative isolates showed resistance to ciprofloxacin (9.3%), sparfloxacin (16.0%),perfloxacin (17.3%), ofloxacin (21.6%), chloramphenicol (34..6%), gentamycin (36.4%), streptomycin (37.%), septrin (49.4%), amoxillin (59.3%), augmentin (62.3%) while thè Gram positive bacteria showed resistance to ciprofloxacin (3.3%), perfloxacin (6.7%), erythromycin (13.3%), streptomycin (21.7%), rocephin (28.3%), septrin (28.3%), gentamycin (36.7%), zinnacef (68.3%), ampiclox (81.7%) and amoxillin (85.0%). Multi-dmg resistance (MDR) to three or more antimicrobials was observed in some of thè isolates. Seventy - seven resistance pattems were observed, 16 in Gram positive and 61 in Gram negative bacteria. Conclusion: This study revealed MDR to two or more antimicrobials in all thè isolates. These can pose antibiotic resistance challenges in situation of primary or secondary canine respiratory infections. Also, this study revealed that 82% of thè dog owners/ lovers had less than 50cm face-to-face contact with these dogs while playing with them, thus increasing their chances of acquiring MDR bacteria from apparently healthy dog 1 results 1
- Background: This paper presents an overview of the global controversies surrounding cosmetic tail docking in puppies, some observed inconsistent practices among dog breeders and Veterinarians in West Africa, and the need for the African Veterinary Profession to take a decisive position on the cosmetic docking procedure. Case presentation: An interesting report of observed complications associated with cosmetic tail docking in a 3 week old male Boerboel is reported alongside the management of the ensuing complications. Conclusion: This paper highlights the still prevalent practice of cosmetic tail docking and seeks to enlighten clinicians towards stemming its abuse in Africa 1 results 1
- Bacteria exist as part of thè norma! flora of thè urogenital tract of animals. However, some of them may cause severe opportunistic infections in immuno-suppressed host requiring antimicrobial chemotherapy. Antìmicrobial resistance may lead to therapy fatture and protracted tllnesses. This study investigated thè diverse reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in thè urogenital tract of dogs in lbadan. A total of 114 urine samples from male (42) and female (72) dogs were examined for thè presence of bacteria by inoculation onto cultural media. Bacteria identification was based on cultural, microscopie and biochemical characteristics. Bacteria isolates were tested for susceptibility to amoxicillin, amoxillin/ clavulanic acid, cefixime, ceftazidime, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin/cloxacillm, erythromycin, gentamicin, nitrofurantoin, ofloxacin, perfloxacin, ceftriaxone, streptomycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethozoJeand cefuroxime. Overall, 184 bacteria isolates were identified from thè 64 (56.14%) of thè 114 urine samples examined. The remaining 47 (41.2%) of 114 samples did notyield significant bacterial growth on thè various bacteriological media. The bacteria detected in thè urine samples inciuded Escherìchia coli (59); Staphylococcvs aureus (40), Slreptococci spp (32), Klebsiella spp (22), Pseudomonas aemgìnosa (12), coagulase negative staphylococcus spp (7), Enterobacter spp (7) and Proteus mirabilis (5). The organisms showed varying degrees of susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Many of thè organisms demonstrated resistance to at least three antimicrobials from different classes. Forty-twò resistance groups were observed among thè Gram-positive bacterial isolates while eleven resistance groups were observed among thè Gram-negative isolates. ‘APX-CRX-AM-CET-S-SXT-E-PEF-CN’ and ‘CAZ-CPR-NITAUG-OFL-CXM-GENV CRX ’ were thè predom inant resistant pattems for Gram-positive and Gram-negative isolates respectively. This study revealed a diversity and high level of multidrug resistance bacteria in thè urogenital traets of dogs. These bacteria maybe important as primary or opportunistic aetiological agents of infection in die affected host with thè possibility of zoonotic transmission to human companions. 1 results 1
