- Ancient physicians such as Herodicus, Hippocrates and Galen recommended exercises as panacea for healthy living in antiquity. Modern scholars such as Christos and Tipton have variously demonstrated the importance of exercises and sports in ancient and modem European societies citing exercises as treatments for some illnesses by the doctor in the Hippocratic Corpus. This paper examined the importance of exercise in antiquity and modernity, even as it serves as a catholicon for healthy living, with a view to identifying the values and relevance of exercise in dealing with illnesses and promoting good health. Sallis and Owen behavioural epidemiology was adopted as theoretical framework. The historical and comparative methodologies were adopted as the study examined the historical trajectory and cross-cultural variations of exercise in antiquity and today’s world. The discourse in this study demonstrated that exercise has been functional as medicine and for healthy living in antiquity and modernity. Medical practitioners, exercise physiologists, including laymen understand its importance and further recommend exercise suitable for people of varying ages. Further studies may be designed to examine low to medium and medium to high intensity exercise and its health implications. 1 results 1

- Background/Aims: Literature suggests that aerobic exercise improves cognitive impairments post stroke. This systematic review was conducted to analyse evidence on the effectiveness of aerobic exercise in improving post-stroke cognitive impairments. Methods: Online databases (PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science) were systematically searched from inception until 13 July 2017 using the keywords stroke/exercise/cognition. Clinical trials that met the inclusion criteria were assessed for methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Extracted data were synthesised for evidence. Results: A total of seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Participants in most of the studies were aged over 60 years and the majority had ischaemic stroke. The most commonly used measure for assessing cognition was the Mini Mental State Examination. The majority of studies included moderate to high intensity exercise (50–70% of VO2max) for 30–60 minutes three to five times per week. There is moderate evidence that aerobic exercise enhances global cognitive function, attention and working memory. Evidence that aerobic exercise improves memory, levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and executive function is conflicting and limited. Conclusions: Aerobic exercise is moderately effective in improving post-stroke cognitive impairments. More clinical trials are needed in view of the methodological limitations and paucity of existing studies. 1 results 1

- Gross Motor Skills (GMSs) ability in children begins to emerge and mature during the preschool and elementary years. Lack of Aerobic Exercise (AE) and Progressive Resistance Exercise (PRE) may impede qualitative patterns of GMSs and expose pupils to unhealthy lifestyle in future. Studies are available on the utilisation of AE and PRE to improve physical-physiological profiles of secondary school students in Nigeria, but gross motor skills and physiological parameters of primary school pupils have not been addressed. The study, therefore, investigated the effects of AE and PRE trainings on the GMSs, Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP), Heart Rate (HR), Percent Body Fat (%BF) and Body Mass Index (BMI) of primary school pupils in Ibadan, Nigeria. The pretest-posttest, control group experimental research design was adopted. Participants were 180 (93 from public and 87 from private schools) pupils purposively drawn from primaries 3, 4 and 5 of each of the two public and private primary schools used. Systematic random sampling technique was used to assign the participants into experimental groups (AE, PRE) and control group. Each of the experimental groups was exposed to a 12-week interval training programme. Pretest-posttest data were collected using Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2) (r=0.91), height meter (r=0.99), weighing scale (r=0.96), Sphygmomanometer (r=0.97), Stethoscope (r=0.98) and Skin-fold Caliper (r=0.89). Three research questions were answered and six hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using analysis of covariance, Scheffe post hoc test and t-test. Primary school pupils had normal systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate but were underfat, underweight and very poor in GMSs levels. There were significant effects of treatments on GMSs (F (3,176) = 257.75, p<0.05), SBP (F (3,176) = 6.86, p<0.05), heart rate (F (3,176) = 9.57, p<0.05) and BMI (F (3,176) = 6.375, p<0.05). However, there was no significant effect of treatments between the GMSs of public and private primary schools pupils as well as between the GMSs of boys and girls in primary schools. Scheffe post hoc test shows that there was a significant mean difference in GMSs among the three groups (PRE and AE, = 6.4; PRE and control, = 20.0). It further showed that the significant mean difference in SPB was between PRE and control ( = 8.0); HR was between AE and control ( = 8.7); BMI was between PRE and control ( = 1.27). AE and PRE enhanced GMSs, SBP, DBP, HR, %BF and BMI in primary school pupils in Nigeria. Therefore AE and PRE should be emphasised in the physical education programme of primary school pupils in order to improve qualitative GMSs, body fat and body weight. 1 results 1

- It is a general position that imagery plays a cognitive behavioral role in enhancing the performance of sport skills as noted in Short and Short (2005), the use of imagery is also more equally significant in exercise activities and can bring to fruition the performance of an individual exerciser because of its unique motivational function. Research studies has been conducted, examining imagery use by different categories of participants related to sport and exercise in the developed world, there have been dearth of literature on imagery use on similar participants in the deve1oping countries, hence the purpose of this study. Participants (482) male and female students were recruited from universities of Nigeria (mean age 24.0 ±SD4,7; male, n=256) and (mean age 23.0±SD5.2, female, n=226). A demographic questionnaire and the Exercise Imagery Questionnaire (EIQ) Hausenblas et. a1 (1999) were used for data collection. Results indicated that no significant difference (p>0.5) was found on the three imagery functions by sex. But significant difference (p<0.5) was located on the appearance imagery function based on the criterion independent variables of three exercise activity groups of the exercise participants. 1 results 1
