- The research examined the impact of microfinance intervention, specifically business and farming loans, on the quality of life of beneficiaries of the Lift Above Poverty Alleviation Programme in Ibadan Metropolis. Utilising a descriptive survey research design, the study included all programme beneficiaries, with a sample size of 200 individuals randomly chosen from four branches of the LAPO bank, including Sango, UI, Ojoo, and Iyana Church. Data collection was done using a 30-item questionnaire measuring the Poverty Alleviation Programmes of Lift Above Poverty Organisation’(PAPLAPOS) Scale (r=.84), which consisted of two subs-scales: Business Loan Scale (r=.83) and Farming Loan Scale (r=.85). The data collected were analysis through the descriptive statistics involving frequency counts, simple percentages, multiple regression, as well as mean and standard deviation. The results of the research indicated that the impact of the microfinance intervention (specifically Business and Farming loans) on the quality of life of the beneficiaries was statistically significant (F (2,148) = 111.425; R2 = .568), explaining 64.3% of the variance. In light of these findings, it is suggested that there is a necessity for microfinance initiatives focusing on enhancing basic and functional literacy to foster the advancement of entrepreneurship, development, and adult education practices in Nigeria. 2 results 2

- "BACKGROUND: Stroke is not gender-discriminatory. Yet, the subject of stroke among females has apparently not received significant attention from clinical researchers. The consequences of stroke include functional and psychosocial sequelae which may cause disability, hinder community reintegration and restrict participation. The inter-relationships among functional ability, community reintegration and participation restriction of community-dwelling, female stroke survivors in Ibadan were assessed in this descriptive study. METHODS: Fifty-two community-dwelling female stroke survivors (mean age = 56.55±9.91 years) were surveyed using consecutive sampling technique. Their functional ability level was measured using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) while London Handicap Scale (LHS) was used to assess their participation restriction. Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient (rho) and Mann-Whitney U test at p = 0.05. RESULTS: Significantly positive correlations (p< 0.05) were found between functional ability and community reintegration (r = 0.54; p = 0.01) as well as between participation restriction and community reintegration (r = 0.34; p = 0.05). Individuals with left hemiplegia had significantly higher mean rank scores in functional ability (30.41) than those who had right hemiplegia (mean rank scores = 21.94). CONCLUSION: Functional ability which appears to be related to stroke laterality showed positive association with both community reintegration and participation restriction. This suggests that improving the functional ability of the stroke survivors may reduce participation restriction and enhance their reintegration into the community. A similar study which compares male and female stroke survivors in the same community is thus necessary. " 1 results 1
- "Purpose: This randomized controlled trial compared the outcomes of physiotherapy intervention on selected indices of recovery for stroke survivors treated at a primary health centre group (PHCG) with those treated in their respective places of domicile group (DG). Methods: Participants were 52 individuals comprising 24 males and 28 females who had suffered a stroke and were recently discharged from two inpatient health facilities in Ibadan, Nigeria. They were randomly assigned into either the PHCG (n=25) or DG (n = 27) and treated twice weekly for 10 consecutive weeks using a physiotherapy intervention protocol comprising a battery of task- specific exercises. The outcomes measured were motor function, balance and handicap assessed using the modified motor assessment scale (MMAS), short-form postural assessment scale for stroke (SF-PASS) and reintegration to normal living index (RNLI), respectively, as well as walking speed which was assessed using a standard technique. Results: Between-group comparison using the General Linear Model revealed no statistically significant difference in both the pre- and post-intervention scores of the two groups on the MMAS, SF-PASS, RNLI and walking speed in both PHCG and DG (p>0.05). However, within-group comparison yielded a statistically significant difference in each of the indices of stroke recovery measured across the 10-week period in both groups. Conclusion: Physiotherapy intervention at the primary health care centre and respective homes of stroke survivors similarly improved clinical outcomes. Treatment at any of these locations may enhance access to physiotherapy after stroke in a low- income community like Nigeria. " 1 results 1
- A Comparison of Pearson's moment (r), Kendall's (t) and the Spearman's rank (r2) correlations was made to find out when they may be suitable for use, particularly when the assumptions that support their use are violated. Bi-variate Samples of size n = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 100 from the normal and exponential distributions with population correlation values of p = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 0.9 (chosen to represent positive correlation between 0 and 1) were used. The power function for a = 0.01 and 0.05 was calculated for the tests. For the normal distribution, the Pearson's moment correlation coefficient was discovered to be the more powerful. However, in the exponential distribution, the power of the Pearson's moment correlation coefficient was lower than those of the non-parametric correlation coefficients, except for small sample sizes i.e, n≤15. 1 results 1
- A large number of hetero-aromatic and carbonyl molecules are useful in pharmaceutical and dye industries. Studies of their transition dipole moment (∆μ) and transition polarizability (∆α) are important because they determine their solubility and usefulness. Experimental determination of these parameters and other electronic properties such as oscillator strength (f) using Solvatochromic Shift Equations (SSE) has proved to be unreliable. This is due to the large spread in their reported values and the overlapping of the electronic transition bands for a given molecule. This study was designed to modify the SSE in improving its reliability, and to computationally determine the photophysical properties of some hetero-aromatic and carbonyl compounds with a view to studying the extent of overlap of the electronic transition bands. The ultra-violet spectra of 2,3-diphenylcyclopropenone; 9,10-phenanthrenequinone; Furan-3,4-dicarboxylic acid; 3,4-diphenylthiophene; 3,4-dicarboxylic-2,5-diphenylthiophene and benzo[b]thiophene in the wavenumber range (25,000 - 52,631) cm-1, in solvents of different polarities at concentrations range of 10-6 - 10-5 M were measured at 25oC. These compounds were selected for the modified SSE due to the variation in their structures. The magnitudes of f in solution (fs) and in vapour phase (fv) were calculated using the Onsager-Abe reaction field model equations. The frequencies of electronic transitions in various solvents were used to characterise the observed bands. The SSE was modified by incorporating the molecular ground state polarizability (α), the molar refraction of each compound, Einstein coefficient and stark term. Estimation of the Δµ and Δα of these compounds were determined using the modified SSE. The electronic properties: f, number of transitions, the frontier orbitals energy gap (ΔELUMO-HOMO) and associated parameters such as: Ionization Potential (IP) and global hardness (ƞ) of the optimized structures of the molecules were calculated based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory using Becke’s three parameter with Lee-Yang-Parr modification and 6-31G* basis set. The spectra of these compounds gave a range of one to five bands designated as S0-S1, S0-S2, S0-S3, S0-S4 and S0-S5 in order of increasing energy. The magnitudes of fs and fv for the observed bands increased with increasing solvent polarities and were within the range 3.2x10-4 - 1.78 and 3.1x10-4 - 1.33 for hetero-aromatics; 1.4x10-3 - 1.52 and 1.3x10-3 - 1.23 for carbonyls. Similar trends observed for the experimental values of Δµ and Δα indicated that the more a transition is allowed, the greater the probability Δµ being larger than zero. The positive values of Δµ (5.7x10-3 - 1.73D) and Δα (8.0x10-5 - 5.5Å3) for hetero-aromatics; Δµ (3.7x10-2 - 1.23D) and Δα (4.8x10-4 - 0.95Å3) for carbonyls indicated substantial redistribution of the π-electron densities in more polar excited state than the ground state. The ΔELUMO-HOMO were (3.19 - 4.09eV) and (4.36 - 5.43eV) for carbonyls and hetero-aromatics respectively. The IP and ƞ increased as solvent polarity increased, suggesting high stability of these compounds in polar solvents. The modified equation is better in the estimation of transition dipole moment and transition polarizability. The energy gaps and associated parameters suggested strong activity of the molecules and minimal overlapping of the transition bands. 1 results 1
