- Good pedestrian facilities support the ease, comfort and safety of pedestrians. A good pedestrian sidewalk requires a good surface condition with appropriate footpath width and surface quality. This study assessed pavement condition of sidewalks in the University of Ibadan using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method. PCI evaluates the surface condition of sidewalks based on distresses observed. The PCI ratings vary from 0 to 100, representing the worst and best surface conditions, respectively. Based on the regular use of sidewalks for access, eighteen major roads were selected within the University of Ibadan. A distress assessment survey was conducted on the roads to collect data on defective sidewalk pavements and their distress conditions. The sidewalks were mainly of two types: plain concrete and concrete slab. Average sidewalk width for fourteen of the roads was less than 1.5 m stipulated in highway design manuals. Sixty percent of the sidewalks were in good condition with PCI values greater than 70. The recurring defects on the plain concrete sidewalk included linear, edge and map cracking. Depression of slab units was the most severe defect on the concrete slap sidewalk. The PCI analysis was used to assess the surface conditions of sidewalks in the University of Ibadan. The results can be used to design maintenance activities to keep the sidewalk system in optimal operational function. - A study was conducted to assess the stakeholders' participation in forest roads maintenance at the Ondo State Afforestation Project (OSAP) in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. Forest roads maintenance is a tool for sustainable forest management. Using simple random sampling method, respondents were selected from the study population which included staff of the Ondo State Afforestation Project, and residents of the communities within the enclaves in the area such as llulitun, Ilege, Lisagbede, Makinde, Ogunlepa I, Ogunlepa II. Results showed that 84.30% of the stakeholders expressed concern about the present condition of the road, 4.30% were not interested on importance attached to road maintenance while 11.40% of the respondents were indifferent. Data obtained from the professional staff of OSAP show that only 20% of the stakeholders actually participated in forest roads maintenance. Although 34.35% of other stakeholders within the forse estate (farmers and timber contractors) claimed to be involved in grading of roads but majority (65.70%) of the stakeholders said they did not participate in road maintenance. The implication of the findings indicate that roads leading to forest areas have not been given adequate attention through stakeholders participation. This has resulted in road degradation thereby causing hardship to smooth transportation of resources and human beings. It is recommended that all stakeholders' be encouraged to participate actively in road maintenance in the study area in other to promote sustainable management of forest resources. 1 results 1
- A survey involving the use of questionnaires, personal communication, physical observation and photographic recording was undertaken in South western Nigeria comprising of Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states to identify the farm structures popularly used; materials used in their construction, their durability and maintenance culture adopted by the users. Farmhouses, cribs, barns, platforms, warehouses, silos, pens, yards and sheds, deep litter houses, palm fronds woven baskets, hutches and cages were the popular farm structures identified. Although a catalogue of materials is available for construction, cost was found to be a major factor in the selection of materials. There was extensive use of locally sourced materials such as wood, natural fibers and earth for the construction of the identified structures. The factors, which tend to reduce the service life and efficiency of these facilities, include roof leaks, abrasion of mud walls, decay and breakage of wooden members, corrosion of metal components, and pitting and cracking of concrete floors. Remedial measures taken include replastering of mud walls and cracked floors, addition of natural fibers to roofs and sealing of leaking points in galvanized roofing sheets, and replacement of broken wood components. These measures where adopted have proved quite useful in improving the efficiency and longevity of the structures. A culture of regular inspection and timely repair of damaged components to prolong the service life and reduce maintenance cost is recommended. 1 results 1

- Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) still remains a very common finding in patients with end stage kidney disease (ESRD) despite the increasing volume of research on dialysis treatment that have resulted in improved haemodialysis delivery. Its occurrence increases the risk of dialysis termination and inadequate dialysis dose that is associated with poor treatment outcome. The study endeavored to study metabolic acidosis and to determine its relationship with the dialysis dose (Kt/V). Materials and Methods: This was a two centre cross-sectional study involving 298 participants with ESKD who had 1642 sessions of maintenance haemodialysis. Serum electrolytes were analyzed by the Ion-Selective Electrode method and haematocrit was determined using a Hematocrit Centrifuge Results: Two hundred and ninety eight (192 males and 106 females) participants took part with a mean age of 51.44 + 7.31 years (males, 51.18 + 4.62 years, females, 52.14 + 2.93 years), P=0.04. The mean serum bicarbonate concentration, post dialysis (20.61 ± 6.26 mmol/L) was significantly higher than the pre dialysis, 18.41 ± 3.63 mmol/L (P<0.001) concentration. The prevalence of pre and post dialysis metabolic acidosis were 79.0% and 38.3% (P<0.001) There was a significant reduction in the mean anion gap following dialysis (P<0.001). The mean dialysis dose was significantly higher in males than females (P=0.03) and in participants with normal PSBC than participants with low PSBC (P<0.001) Risk factors for metabolic acidosis were advancing age, elevated Body Mass Index and blood pressure. Metabolic acidosis was negatively related to glomerular filtration rate and haematocrit. Aging, lesser dialysis frequency, independently predicted metabolic acidosis Conclusion: Metabolic acidosis is quite common in patients on maintenance dialysis, more common in females, advancing age and in less frequent dialysis treatment. Its occurrence increased the risk of inadequate dialysis. 1 results 1

- Language Shift Language Maintenance (LSLM) designates the investigation of movement patterns from one language to another and the efforts made by native speakers and institutions to reverse the shift. Ogu, a minority language in Southwestern Nigeria, had been experiencing shift to Yoruba and English. Existing literature on Ogu LSLM affirm shift without extensively acknowledging systematic strategies being adopted by native speakers in the maintenance of the language. This study, therefore, examined cultural policing as a unique maintenance strategy that the elite Ogu have adopted to stem the tide of the shift with a view to investigating its dynamics and efficacy. The study adopted Fishman’s Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (GIDS) to assess the extent of shift of Ogu, and Giles et al’s Ethnolinguistic Vitality Theory (EVT) to assess the extent to which Ogu people’s vitality has positively impacted on the language. Data were collected through participant observation and purposively through 12 key informant interviews with individuals involved in cultural policing: four in each local government area (LGA). Twelve in-depth interviews were conducted with four individuals who had been previously policed in each LGA. Three focus group discussions with native speakers in ancestral homelands were also held in Javie in Lagos State, Idi-Iroko and Obakobe in Ogun State. Data were content analysed. Ogu language experienced widespread shift to Yoruba and English, which manifested in the bearing of Yoruba names, speaking of Yoruba and the denial of Ogu identity. A reversal of attitude in favour of Ogu was facilitated by members of the Ogu community, identified as cultural police, who adopted informal non-coercive and subtle policing strategies as well as persuasion. The efficacy of the strategy rested substantially on the high formal education and cosmopolitan experience of the cultural police team. The feeling of linguistic nostalgia was engendered while the denial of Ogu identity in public was reduced. Efforts towards maintaining the language included intergenerational transfer, use of Ogu in domestic and public domains, reversion to Ogu names, sensitisation of the people into developing confidence in themselves and renewed loyalty to Ogu; all of which increased its ethnolinguistic vitality. Loyalty to Ogu was also tied to socio-economic benefits, namely: scholarships, bursaries, monetary gifts and job opportunities for Ogu speakers, which endeared the language to its people. Cultural policing was complemented with publishing of books in Ogu, translation of Yoruba and English hymns and songs to Ogu and encouragement of the Ogu in the Diaspora to pay regular visits to their ancestral homelands, particularly during festive periods. Ogu people have successfully initiated and ensured the maintenance of their language by employing subtle cultural policing strategies of persuasion and incentives. - Rising incidences of roof failures in recent times in many parts of Oyo state, Nigeria have become a matter of concern and a survey was undertaken to investigate the pattern of failure, causative agents, consequences and possible remedial measures aimed at curtailing these occurrences. The survey adopted the use of questionnaires, interview schedules and focus group discussions. Information considered of relevance to the study was the type of roof, materials used for construction, type of buildings and topography of the environment. Besides being blown off, which is the popularly acknowledged index of failure, a number of roofs were found to have failed in their primary function of offering protection against rain and reduced solar radiation even when they were not blown off. Wind is a major causative agent of roof failures as it either completely removes the roof or tears it, leading to leakages. Corrosion was also a major factor resulting in leakages. The consequences of roof failures include damage to personal belongings and exposure of inhabitants and livestock to inclement weather conditions, and in some cases livestock were lost. Added to these are the psychological trauma to which victims are subjected and progress retardation as in many cases, no meaningful family projects can be executed while waiting for the roof to be replaced. As panacea, the adoption of a good maintenance culture, good workmanship and consultation of experts in the selection and construction of roofs are recommended. 1 results 1

- The objective of the study was to estimate the productivity of a locally fabricated band saw using delay analyses in order to achieve improved production and judicious utilisation of available resources. A time and motion study was applied to collect the data for the processing system and the data recorded and processed. The working cycle of the machine was also recorded and all variables that affect productivity. The result shows productivity was significantly affected by the log supplied characteristics, sawing patterns, maintenance of equipment and level of training. This reveals the need to improve equipment availability and maintenance during sawing. 1 results 1
