- The trophic effects of honey and glutamine in the healing and adaptation of the small bowel following intestinal resection were studied in some Nigerian non-descript breeds of rabbits. Nine rabbits of mixed sexes with mean body weight of 1.45 ±0.55kg were used. They were randomised into three treatment groups following 50% small bowel resection. Group A rabbits were placed on oral honey treatment. Group B on oral glutamine and group C on normal saline (control). All groups exhibited signs of small bowel adaptation (glutamine(B) honey (A) control (C) at the end of the experiment (4 weeks) with oral glutamine showing the best overall effects on intestinal mucosal growth and adaptation evidenced by significant increase (P<0.05) in residual bow'el length (37.3%), villi width (20.0%), crypt depth (113.3%) and a non significant increase in villus height (33.3%) and cellular mass (10.2%). Honey showed a better effect than control with a significant increase (P<0.05) in villi width (18.2%), crypts depth (66.7%) and cellular mass (33.9%) and a non significant increase in gross residual bow'el length (24.6%), and villus height (30.5%). Our result shows that honey and glutamine have trophic effects on bowel mucosa healing and hyperplasia and have potential therapeutic effects on massive bowel resection in humans 2 results 2
- "This work is aimed at determining the feasibility of manufacturing automobile batteries on a small scale Level. It involves an economic evaluation directed at the typical 12V, 60Ah car battery. A process analysis was done with a view to determining the scalability of the processes. A review of relevant literature gives insights on the product structure and workings, material interactions, process requirements and the various manufacturing strategies and their respective benefits The process is designed with a bias for outsourcing, a growing trend in the direction of specialization and agile product development. Thus, the process is designed for assembly as a parallel/flow line hybrid work system. Next, economic models are developed to assess costs, profit, revenue and optimal production volume. Also, breakeven and Payback Period models are developed for determining the viability of the venture. It was found that with 11 workers, the facility yields up to 1173 units of car battery per month. This requires an initial capital investment of N1, 132,160. At an initial price of N 5,500, the product is expected to generate monthly revenue of N6,450,830 at full running capacity. Thus, a profit margin of N 3,015,340 was obtained, amounting to 46.7% of total revenue. Breakeven occurs at a demand of 121 units, which is 10.3% of the monthly production capacity. This study shows the potentials and entrepreneurial opportunities of investing in the small scale manufacture of engineering products. " 1 results 1
- A 31 year-old Nigerian man with jejuno-jejunal intussusception with the lead point being an adenocarcinoma complicated by small intestinal volvulus is presented. The subtle clinical features of an underlying small bowel malignancy were masked by the overwhelming clinical and radiological features of intussusception. This rare case is reported to remind clinicians to have an increased index of suspicion of malignancy in patients who present with the usual features of chronic anemia, weight loss and loss of appetite with an intra-abdominal mass. The presentation of acute intestinal obstruction, with mesenteric vein thrombosis probably due to intussusception or volvulus should not however lower the suspicion. Histological evaluation of surgical biopsies is of immense importance. 1 results 1

- Achievement is taken as the major goal for which classroom is set up. This is because society frowns at any classroom effort that does not lead to pupils’ high achievement. Hence, the reason society may hold both home and school factors responsible in this regard among others. In order to improve pupils’ academic achievement, educationists continue to encourage teachers to change their methods to bring about quality learning and achievement. This study therefore investigated effects of two different teaching strategies among primary school pupils. The research design employed was the pre-test, post-test control group quasi-experimental design. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The participants (58 males and 42 females) were drawn from randomly selected primary five classes in public schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. The instrument used to collect the data was English Language Achievement Test (ELAT). The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics which includes mean, standard deviation while inferential statistics includes use of t-test. The result revealed significant main effect on pupils' performance on English Language achievement test. However, there was no significant difference in the performance of male and female pupils. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the use of small group instruction should be adopted in primary school to enhance the teaching and learning of English Language among others. 1 results 1

- An experiment was conducted to compare the utilization of tephrosia candida and Leucaena leucocephala in mixtures with Panicum maximum as feed for small ruminants, using the artificial bag technique of feed evaluation. Three West African dwarf (WAD) sheep with rumen cannula were used for the experiment. T. candida was formulated into diets with P. maximum as diets A, B and C while L. leucocephala was formulated into diets with P. maximum as diets D, E and F in the ratio 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 respectively for both legumes. The degradation characteristics indicated L. leucocephala – based diets as being more (P < 0.05) degradable in the rumen than the T. candida – based diets, with diet D having the highest potential degradability (a+b) value. 1 results 1

- Background: Eucalyptus oil (EO), derived from Eucalyptus species, possesses vast remedial and healing properties, although its gut health-promoting properties have not been well investigated. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition of a commercial EO formulation and its potential role in protecting against aflatoxinmB1 (AfB1)-induced gastrointestinal damage in rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into six groups with eight rats each. Control rats were administered with the vehicle (1% Tween 80) for 14 days, while another group was exposed to two oral doses of AFB1 on days 12 and 14. Two other groups were pre-treated with oral doses of EO (50 and 100 mg/kg b.w.) for 14 consecutivedays, along with two oral doses of AfB1 (5 mg/kg b.w.) on days 12 and 14. The remaining two groups weretreated with EO alone at the two doses for 14 days. At the end of the experiment, blood samples, stomachand intestinal tissues were collected for measurement of oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters and lightmicroscopic examination. Results: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed Eucalyptol (1, 8-cineole) as the main con stituent (67.48%) of the oil. AfB1 administration induced oxidative and inflammatory disturbances, indicated by significantly (p<0.05) increased serum nitric oxide level and myeloperoxidase activity; increased tissue contents of hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls, accompanied with corresponding histological alterations. AfB1 also induced significant (p<0.05) reductions in glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. Treatment with EO produced significant improvements in the biochemical parameters as well as the appearance of the gastric and intestinal mucosa. EO alone, at the two doses tested did not produce any significant changes in the parameters investigated. Conclusion: The findings from this study showed that EO demonstrated protective activity against Aflatoxin induced toxicity in stomach and intestinal tissues and may thus find application in treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. 1 results 1
- Background: Printers work in small scale enterprises located within residential and commercial areas of various cities in Nigeria with little regulation of work premises and work practices. Aims: A cross-sectional study was designed to assess the work conditions and health problems of printers. Methods: All printers at the workshops visited were interviewed after obtaining informed consent Socio- demographic characteristics, occupational hazards, current health problems and injuries were recorded. Printers' hands were examined for dermatitis. A check list was applied at each workshop to assess the work environment and welfare and safety facilities. Results: A total of 369 printers were interviewed in 224 workshops. Occupational hazards reported were sharp edges of machinery 210 (74%), chemicals 41(15%) and generator fitmes 33(1.6%). Sixty printers (16%) had work- related accidents in the year preceding the study. 'Finger caught in machine' accounted for 70%> of accidents. Injuries reported included lacerations, 49 (57%), bruises and cuts 45(52%) and finger nail torn off, 8 (9%). Current health problems were skin conditions reported by 21(5%), respiratory symptoms 46 (12%) predominantly sneezing, cough and runny nose, musculoskeletal disorders 103 (28%), predominantly low back pain, neurological symptoms, 60 (16 %) predominantly headaches and eye problems, 32 (9%) predominantly poor vision. Hand dermatitis was observed in 17(5%>) printers. Ventilation was inadequate in 100 (47%) workshops; 17 (8%) had first aid boxes and general housekeeping was poor in 33 (16%) workshops. Conclusions: Health education interventions, gloi’e use, first aid facilities, improvement of ventilation and general housekeeping are needed to address these problems. 1 results 1
