- This study was carried out to investigate barriers encountered by fresh students in seeking information and the extent to which library user education can help in improving their information seeking behaviour at the University of Ibadan. The actual utilization of resources in the library remains inconsistent, low and unsatisfactory. Considering that low utilization of library resources undermines the huge investment on library resources and personnel retention, this study has examined the barriers encounter by students in information seeking and the extent to which library orientation can help in improving information seeking behaviour of first year undergraduate students at the University of Ibadan. Survey research design was adopted for the study. Using a systematic sampling technique, a total of 230 first year students drawn from six faculties participated in the study. Results show that majority of first year students participated in use education in KDL but encounter information seeking challenges in the library. Because of poor perception of the library which makes them doubt the ability of the library to meet their information needs. The study suggests that effective utilization of academic library resources is dependent on perceived availability of relevant information materials, proper understanding of the products and services offered by the library and user’s ability to utilize information retrieval tools and systems. The study therefore recommends a holistic approach to library orientation in colleges and universities in order to promote student’s library utilization and build up their information seeking capacity. 2 results 2

- "The Fadama-Il part of the National Fadama Development Project was implemented to consolidate the gains of Fadama-I in Nigeria, in order to further improve the welfare of the rural people and enhance public participation in decision-making at the community level. This paper examines the contributions of Fadama-Il project to the socio-economic and infrastructural development Ibarapa North local government area of Oyo state. Nigeria. The paper presents the result of a questionnaire survey of Fadama User Groups (FUGs) carried out in 2009 in the study area. A total of 258 (20%) of the 1.290 members of 86 FUGs found in the three principal towns and twenty-two villages in the study area were sampled. Stratified and systematic random sampling techniques were used in the selection of sampled settlements and respondents respectively. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used for data analysis. Findings showed that the income of the rural poor improved significantly after partaking in the Fadama-Il projects with 56.6% of the respondents earning an average annual income of #200.000. 00 or more. There was also a drastic reduction in the proportion of people in low income class from 33.0% to 7.0%. The result of the paired samples t-test gave a t value of-4. 067at 257 degrees of freedom while the probability of occurring by chance is 0.000 which is lower at O.05 level of significance. The Fadama Community Associations (FCAs) provided about 33 rural infrastructural facilities. Based on its visible overall outcome. the paper argued that Fadama-Il project is a viable rural development and poverty alleviation strategy. It concluded that the project's goal of rural development was achieved in the study area and as such can be replicated in other rural communities in Oyo state and Nigeria. Recommendations are offered to sustain the success recorded by the project. " 1 results 1

- Academic libraries are facing challenges of competitive pressures, information availability, rising costs and a global digital environment. This situation calls for a better understanding of the specific needs of library users in order to provide the appropriate type and level of service that meets those needs. Assessment of service quality in libraries is one of the most reliable channels to know if clients are satisfied with services offered them. It is therefore imperative to investigate how library users perceive service quality. This paper examines the service quality and users’ satisfaction at Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan and also examines how user surveys have been employed in a number of previously published literatures. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study to evaluate the library’s performance by measuring the users’ satisfaction with (a) library services and resources (b) infrastructure/place/space and (c) suggestions for service improvement. The instrument was distributed randomly to a sample of 800 library users from the university. Suggestions are offered about ways library and information service providers could make more use of the information derived from their own and other organizations' user surveys to improve their services in order to survive. 1 results 1

- Despite its enhancement of citizens’ freedom of expression and participation through content creation, studies have shown that the digital space enabled by Web 2.0 technologies is not without some negative consequences such as prevalence of negative rhetoric with serious implications for social cohesion. However, the veracity of this claim, as related to the Nigerian context, needs further empirical investigation. Guided by Face Negotiation Theory, this study, therefore, through quantitative content analysis and textual analysis, examined the nature of issues articulated by readers in the comment sections of purposively selected Nigerian news media- Premium Times, The Punch, Sahara Reporters, and The Vanguard. Analyses of 3, 796 users’ comments show that User-Generated Content (UGC) in the comment sections of the selected news media have more incidences of negative rhetoric (n=2,023; 53.3%) than positive (n=1,298; 34.2%) and neutral (n=475; 12.5%) comments. Besides, while negotiating self-worth and personas (face), users employ textual codes that carry elements of impoliteness, harassment, abuse, hatred, threats, incitement, and danger, and are capable of promoting cultural contradictions, ethnic dichotomies, and socio-political dissonance among Nigerians. A discourse culture where citizens predominantly employ negative rhetoric to negotiate conflicts is inimical to social and structural cohesion of the nation. 1 results 1
