- Background: Cervical Cancer (CC) is the second most common cancer among women in Nigeria. The women present at the late stage of the disease with no history of screening. Poor knowledge of CC has been reported which could have implications on screening uptake. The study assessed knowledge and cervical cancer screening self-efficacy among women in Jema'a LGA of Kaduna State. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional design was utilized and 382 women were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics- Chi-square test at 0.05 level of significance. Results: 167(43.7%) of the respondents had good knowledge on CC. Majority, 315 (82.5%) had high self-efficacy scores. Uptake was low as 227(59.4%) of the respondents had never been screened. There was a significant association between educational level and knowledge of CC screening (X-58.01; p=0.000), religion and self-efficacy (X= 7.873; p=0.020), education level and self-efficacy on CC screening (X-6.980; p=0.008). Conclusion: The women's knowledge and uptake of cervical cancer screening was poor; however, the respondents' self- efficacy was high. There is need for educational interventions to increase knowledge of cervical cancer screening and to make screening services available and accessible to enhance uptake. 1 results 1
- Background: Cervical cancer screening (CCS) continuously has low awareness and is poorly utilized in developing countries despite higher incidence of cervical cancer (CC). Increasing incidence of CC has been associated with late reporting of symptoms, ignorance about the disease, and its preventive measures. This study was conducted to further investigate the determinants of CCS uptake among women attending selected family planning clinics in Ibadan, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: Adopting a cross‑sectional design, 205 consenting respondents attending family planning clinics were interviewed using an interviewer‑administered questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21. The hypotheses were tested using Chi‑square, odds ratio, and logistic regression at P < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 33 ± 8 years; 176 (85.9%) were married and 72 (35.1%) had tertiary education. Although 71% of the respondents were aware of CC, only 37.1% had good knowledge and 16.1% had previously utilized CCS. About two‑thirds (68.8%) of the respondents were willing to uptake CCS, except for perceived barriers such as lack of understanding of the disease and inadequate information about the services coupled with limited availability of the CCS services. There was a significant association between uptake of CCS and knowledge (χ2 = 17.944, P < 0.001), education (χ2 = 7.724, P < 0.024), and income (χ2 = 32.22, P < 0.001). On logistic regression, the uptake CCS remained influenced mainly by income of >40,000 Naira (OR = 5.355, CI = 1.678–17.083) and knowledge (OR = 3.112, CI = 1.247–7.768). Conclusion: Family planning clinics are readily available centers for increasing the knowledge base of the women on the need for regular CCS. This needs to be duly incorporated into our routine services. 1 results 1
- Background: Folate deficiency is associated with poor pregnancy outcomes and is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies in women, especially those of reproductive age. Aims: This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge and uptake of folic acid among a sample of pregnant women. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study, using a structured questionnaire, was carried out among 300 pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in one hospital in Oluyoro, Ibadan, Nigeria. Findings: All participants claimed to have heard of folic acid and major source of information was health workers (77.3%). Only 11.8% knew that folic acid can prevent birth defects and just 22.7% knew the best time to start using folic acid. Almost all the women (98.3%) reported using folic acid in the current pregnancy, of whom 54.2% used it as prescribed. Education (P=0.002), marital status (P=0.001), plan of pregnancy (P=0.022), and maternal age (P=0.046) were significantly associated with knowledge of folic acid. Employment status was significantly associated with uptake of folic acid (P=0.004). Conclusions: In this study, knowledge and uptake of folic acid was low among young, single and low education status women. Campaigns promoting periconceptional use of folic acid will be very useful in reaching women of child-bearing age particularly those pregnant and not registered for antenatal care. 1 results 1
- Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common sexually transmitted infection responsible for some cancers including cervical cancer. Despite nearly half of the Nigerian population being at risk (women <25), vaccination uptake against the infection is still less than 5%. Methodology: This cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted using a multi-stage sampling technique. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 300 in-school adolescents aged 15-19 years, across 15 private and public secondary schools in Ibadan-North and Ibadan North-West of Oyo State, whose parents gave consent. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS v21. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to measure internal consistency reliability while categorical tables were compared using chi-square and regression analysis with a p-value <0.05. Results: The mean age of respondents was 15.8 ± 0.84 years. Half of them were females (52.3%) and also attended private schools (56.3%). Very few of the respondents had heard about HPV (21.0%) and HPV vaccine (12.7%), however, more than half had heard about cervical cancer (55.3%). Few respondents had good knowledge (11.0%) and positive perception (27.0%) of HPV, cervical cancer and HPV vaccine. The major source of information was social media (46.2%). Half of the respondents reported intention to take the vaccine if recommended by their family doctor (56.3%) and if given parental approval (52.0%), however, many (60.7%) were concerned about the vaccine’s side effects.Conclusion: Findings show that parents and health workers influence adolescents’ HPV vaccination uptake.The study thus recommends the prioritization of parental involvement in HPV vaccination. Parents and health workers should therefore be targeted as key stakeholders in driving the awareness of HPV and uptake of HPV vaccine among adolescents. 1 results 1
- Background: The mortality attributed to breast cancer remains high especially among rural dwelling women in low-income countries. Late diagnosis that may be as a result of poor knowledge and nonutilization of available screening has been implicated in the high mortality burden. Enhancing access to and uptake of breast cancer screening will reduce the cancer burden. Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the willingness to uptake breast cancer screening among rural women in South Western Nigeria. Factors associated with willingness to uptake breast cancer screening were also determined. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional design using multi-stage sampling was used to select 920 women in Igbo-Ora, South Western Nigeria. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analysed using SPSS at a 5% level of statistical significance. Results: The respondents were aged 15 to 86 years with 795 (86.4%) being within the reproductive age group. Of total respondents, 546 were aware of breast cancer of which 171 (31.3%) had good knowledge about the symptoms of breast cancer. Of the 834 respondents who had never screened for breast cancer, 651 (78.1%) were willing to screen. Respondents within the reproductive age group and those that knew someone with breast cancer had odds of 2.7 and 2.5 respectively of being willing to uptake breast cancer screening. (OR=2.9; 95% CI=1.8-5.1 and OR=2.5; 95% CI 1.2-5.7) Conclusion: Although the knowledge of breast cancer and the awareness of screening methods among women in rural area is low, their willingness to get screened remains high. The use of survivors as well as survivor relatives should be considered during community-based health programmes aimed at improving uptake of screening among this population. 1 results 1
- Background: Timely uptake of surgery is vital in the control of childhood blindness due to cataract. The aim of this study is to determine the uptake of surgery as well as the frequency and reasons for rescheduling of surgery for childhood cataract in a tertiary hospital in southwest Nigeria. Methods: A retrospective study of children with childhood cataract seen at the Paediatric Ophthalmology unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan between 2011 and 2015. Demographic and clinical information was retrieved from case records. Caregivers of children who did not have surgery were contacted by telephone to elicit reasons why surgery was not done. Results: A total of 164 children were included in the study; 90 (54.9%) were male. The median age at presentation was 4 years with a range of 2–180 months. A total of 64 (39.0%) children had unilateral cataract. All patients were scheduled for surgery, but 123 (75%) underwent surgery. Surgery was rescheduled in 42 (34.1%) of those who had surgery. Reasons for rescheduling included financial constraints, illness, delay in paediatrician evaluation to ascertain fitness for anaesthesia and strike actions by health workers in the hospital. Conclusion: Three quarters of the children had surgery, though it had been rescheduled, at least once, in about onethird of them. Delayed uptake of surgery was mainly due to inability to afford treatment and strike actions. The need for improved coverage of health insurance especially for the paediatric age group in developing countries cannot be overemphasized.
