- A modification of Biot's poroelastic differential equations is made to include matrix-fluid interaction mechanisms which assume a solid-fluid relaxation function coupling coefficient. Values of physical properties of sediments are incorporated into equations which define phase velocity and attenuation for porous media which are dependent on the composite densities of various media (silt, and medium and coarse sand). The results enable us to compare the attenuation and velocities of waves in these media. We observed that the density of coarse sand is greater than that of medium sand and this in turn is greater than that of silt-the same holds-for the velocities of P-waves in these media but the situation is converse for shear waves in the same given media. As the densities of the media increase, their attenuation decreases as it was found that the attenuation of silt is the highest and that of coarse sand lowest for the media considered. 1 results 1

- All over the world, social communication and interaction are fundamental aspects of everyday life. From infancy, humans are social beings, gazing at other people and turning towards voices, grasp a finger and even smiles. For social relationship to become possible there is a need to take into consideration the thoughts and feelings of another person. Essentially, it is the understanding that others' thought is different from one's thought that makes social interaction possible. However, some children experience difficulties with successful social communication and this inability or deficit is termed social communication disorder (SCD). This impaired social language use creates communication difficulties, thereby causing significant impact on academic, adaptive and psychosocial functioning. Additionally, children with SCD has been under identified over time due to its co-occurrence with other conditions which leads to wrong diagnosis, inappropriate therapeutic considerations and non-effective communication as well as poor interpersonal relationship. Thus, this paper, focuses on the causes, incidence, assessment, impact and therapeutic interventions of social communication disorder. 1 results 1

- Autoimmunity and certain micronutrients have been implicated in the pathogenesis of thyroid disorders such as simple nontoxic goitre (SNTG). Alterations in certain trace elements and autoimmune parameters may arise from an indeterminate autoimmune mechanism. We sought to evaluate the association and interactions between trace elements and autoantibodies in simple nontoxic goitre. All consenting participants based on clinical and thyroid function tests were recruited for this case-control study. Subjects comprised of 37 patients and 44 controls, from the Surgery Outpatient and Endocrinology Clinics of the University College Hospital and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, respectively. Anthropometric indices were measured, serum trace element were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), thyroid autoantibodies and thyroid function tests were performed in serum using Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies were significantly elevated in SNTG compared with controls, suggesting immune alteration. The free triiodothyronine (FT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) were significantly increased in SNTG (3.72±0.02 and 14.9±0.21 pmol/L) compared with controls (3.63±0.12. pmol/L and 13.12±0.12 pmol/L). The level of TSH was significantly increased in SNTG compared with controls. Antithyroglobulin level was positive in 14.0% (130.93±35.02 kiu/L) SNTG. Significantly reduced levels of Cu (11.92±0.32, µmol/L), Fe (20.13±0.52µmol/L) and Se (0.53±0.01µmol/L) relative to the controls (16.12±0.22, 28.73±0.23 and 3.82±0.03µmol/l) were found in SNTG. Simple nontoxic goitre appear to be associated with imbalance in certain essential trace elements and presence of autoantibodies which probably are among the key mechanisms involved in the pathology of thyroid disorders. Early detection of these abnormalities may be useful in the better understanding and improved management of thyroid disorders. 1 results 1
- Available epidemiological reports have indicated an increase in the incidence of ulcerative colitis, as well as alcohol consumption, globally. The present study investigated the possible interactive effects of ethanol consumption on ulcerative colitis and its associated testicular dysfunction using six groups of 12 pubertal mice each. Group I (Control) mice received drinking water alone. Group II mice received ethanol alone at 5 g/kg body weight. Group III mice received 2.5% dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) in drinking water followed by normal drinking water. Groups IV, V, and VI mice received DSS followed by ethanol at 1.25, 2.5, and 5 g/kg, respectively. Administration of ethanol to mice with ulcerative colitis intensified the disease-activity index with marked reduction in colon length, colon mass index, body weight gain, and organo-somatic indices of testes and epididymis when compared with the DSS-alone group. Moreover, ethanol exacerbated colitis-mediated decrease in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants but increased the oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers in the testes and epididymis. The diminution in luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and testosterone levels was intensified following administration of ethanol to mice with ulcerative colitis that were administered 5 g/kg ethanol alone. The decrease in sperm functional parameters and testicular spermatogenic indices as well as histopathological damage in colon, testes, and epididymis was aggravated following administration of ethanol to mice with ulcerative colitis. In conclusion, the exacerbating effects of ethanol on ulcerative colitis-induced testicular dysfunction are related to increased oxidative stress and inflammation in the treated mice. 1 results 1
- Available literature has applied different theories to the language of advertisement. It has examined it through stylistic, pragmatic and speech act theories but not from the perspective of interactional sociolinguistics. Therefore, this study applied John Gumperz‟s theory of interactional sociolinguistics to the language of Insurance advertising in newspapers and on billboards within the Nigerian linguistic and sociocultural context, with the aim of analysing the persuasive strategies employed in it. The theoretical framework for the study was an adaptation of Gumperz‟s theory of interactional sociolinguistics and Halliday‟s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), which was used to analyse the lexico-syntactic aspect of the work. This is because Gumperz‟s theory of interactional sociolinguistics has the ability to account for the linguistic and socio-cultural variables that are employed in a communicative event while Halliday‟s SFG gives comprehensive information about grammatical description. The data, consisting of 100 published insurance advertisements, were collected from three purposively selected Nigerian national newspapers – The Guardian, The Punch and Daily Champion covering 2001-2009, complemented with billboard advertisements from all the southwestern states of Nigeria. The newspapers were selected because they have national coverage and a high density of insurance advertisements from different insurance companies in Nigeria. Several pragmatic strategies were used in both newspaper and billboard insurance advertisements to encourage potential customers to patronise the insurance companies. They included reliance on shared social and cultural rules, allusion to shared history and values, reliance on shared knowledge and presuppositions about the world. Speech-style switching was used to get the reader interested and conversationally involved with the texts. The lexical choice of the advertisers contained a dominant use of skill-indicative adjectives which portrayed the insurance companies as experts in their field and were used to evoke confidence in their expertise. Examples are „unfailing‟, „exceptional‟ and „skilled‟. There was also the use of morality indicative nouns, such as „integrity‟ strategically utilised to persuade potential customers about the trustworthiness of the company, and the use of riskindicative nouns for instance „disaster‟ to show that insuring was mandatory. Actionprovoking verbs such as „get‟ and „come‟ were used to encourage the reader to respond and act on what they had read. The syntactic option of the advertisers displayed a copious use of the simple sentence through which they declared their virtues and the benefits of patronising them. Pictorial rhetoric was designed to make participation in insurance appealing to the reader. Rhetorical devices such as symbolism, metaphor, hyperbole and personification were used to enhance their persuasive presentation. Creative and manipulative use of capital letters and typefaces of different sizes emphasised different aspects of the message. Insurance advertisers draw on linguistic, social, cultural, pictorial and aesthetic resources to build a strong persuasive discourse. The language of insurance advertisement revealed that insurance advertisers considered these media a powerful means of renewing the almost lost interest of the average Nigerian in participation in insurance 1 results 1
