- Objective: The aim of the descriptive, cross sectional, questionnaire-based study reported here was to explore the causes of low productivity in non-communicable diseases research among postgraduate scholars and early career researchers in Nigeria and identify measures that could facilitate increased research output. Results: The 89 respondents were masters-level, doctoral scholars and resident doctors who attended a workshop. Majorities of the respondents (over 70%) either agreed or strongly agreed that factors contributing to poor non-communicable diseases research productivity include a dearth of in-country researchers with specialized skills, inability of Nigerian researchers to work in multidisciplinary teams, poor funding for health research, sub-optimal infrastructural facilities, and limited use of research findings by policy makers. Almost all the respondents (over 90%) agreed that potential strategies to facilitate non-communicable diseases research output would include increased funding for research, institutionalization of a sustainable, structured capacity building program for early career researchers, establishment of Regional Centers for Research Excellence, and increased use of research evidence to guide government policy actions and programs. 2 results 2

- The study investigated between parents adolescent communication, attitude towards sexual abstinence and self-efficacy for refusing sexual behavior among adolescents in Ibadan metropolis. In a cross sectional survey, 200 adolescents were randomly sampled to respond to a structured questionnaire, their ages ranged between 11 and 20years. Result indicated that parents adolescent communication, religiosity, and attitude towards abstinence have joint influence on self-efficacy for refusing sexual behavior (F(3,197)=2.71: R2 =.21, p<.05. Also, parent adolescent communication, religiosity and attitude towards abstinence were found to independently predict self-efficacy for refusing sexual behavior. It then become pertinent that in a bid to stem the tide of HIV infection, indiscriminate sexual activities and their attendant negative consequences, parent adolescent communication should be strengthened, faith based advocacy/mobilization agents, premarital sex/marital infidelity should be adopted while attitudinal change programmes on sex education and consent should be explored. 2 results 2
- "Background: Non communicable diseases are increasing in proportion in developing countries. Ovarian cancer has the highest case fatality rate among gynecological cancers but forms only 3%. Its etiology is unknown, and no cost‑effective screening program exists due to the absence of well‑defined precursor lesions. Early symptoms are vague but can be used to detect Stages I and II diseases. Documented knowledge or awareness of ovarian cancer varies between 4.4% and 15%. However, this is the first community‑based survey in Africa to determine knowledge of ovarian cancer by females. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire was semi‑structured and interviewer administered. Females aged 15 years and above were selected through a four‑stage process involving urban/semi‑urban settings, local government areas, wards, and units. We randomly selected 424 participants, equally distributed between urban and semi‑urban areas. Bivariate and linear regression analyses were done. Results: Most (83.5%) of the respondents were <40 years, married (56.1%), had secondary education (52.4%), Yoruba (92.5%), and Christian (56.1%). With good knowledge score taken as having at least 70% of required information, about 2.8% of respondents had good knowledge of ovarian cancer. Only level of education and occupation significantly affected knowledge of ovarian cancer. Conclusion: There is very poor knowledge about ovarian cancer, its risk factors, symptoms, treatment, and prognosis among females in Ibadan, strongly affected by education and occupation." 1 results 1
- "Radio stations have used jingles for environmental education and communication in Nigeria for decades though not much has been done to study the impact of such use—which is the purpose of this article. Through 12 focus group discussions (FGDs) in six local government areas of Oyo state, Nigeria, interviews with the program directors of two radio stations, and a questionnaire administered with 18 program producers from the stations, the researcher found that producers and directors had full confidence in the ability of the jingles to engender environmental sanctity, and that listeners fully understood the message of the jingles. However, listeners mostly did not adopt the behavior recommended by the jingles, because the government did not make the infrastructures needed to do so available or functional. Though the jingles were aired, the outcome of their use is a frustration of the listeners and even the producers. Based on the findings, the article draws five lessons for better social marketing of environmental behavior. " 1 results 1
