Page will reload when a filter is selected or excluded.- A survey involving the use of questionnaires, personal communication, physical observation and photographic recording was undertaken in South western Nigeria comprising of Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states to identify the farm structures popularly used; materials used in their construction, their durability and maintenance culture adopted by the users. Farmhouses, cribs, barns, platforms, warehouses, silos, pens, yards and sheds, deep litter houses, palm fronds woven baskets, hutches and cages were the popular farm structures identified. Although a catalogue of materials is available for construction, cost was found to be a major factor in the selection of materials. There was extensive use of locally sourced materials such as wood, natural fibers and earth for the construction of the identified structures. The factors, which tend to reduce the service life and efficiency of these facilities, include roof leaks, abrasion of mud walls, decay and breakage of wooden members, corrosion of metal components, and pitting and cracking of concrete floors. Remedial measures taken include replastering of mud walls and cracked floors, addition of natural fibers to roofs and sealing of leaking points in galvanized roofing sheets, and replacement of broken wood components. These measures where adopted have proved quite useful in improving the efficiency and longevity of the structures. A culture of regular inspection and timely repair of damaged components to prolong the service life and reduce maintenance cost is recommended. 1 results 1

- Road performance and longevity are greatly enhanced by geosynthetics. It carries out a number of functions, including reinforcement, stability, separation, fluid barrier, drainage, and filtration, to improve their use on road pavement. Geosynthetic materials were introduced to some sections of the subbase layer of the Lagos- Ibadan expressway to enhance the overall performance of the pavement. Soil samples were collected at a burrow pit at km 90 of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The contractor handling the Ojoo-Iwo road segment of the expressway provided the geosynthetic materials employed in the study. The natural moisture content of the soil, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, optimum moisture content, Maximum Dry Density (MDD), and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) were determined using standard procedures. The soil is gapped-graded, sandy-gravel, and has a plasticity index of 8%. The natural and stabilized soils have corresponding MDDs of 2040 and 1960 kg/m3. After the geosynthetic materials were added to the subbase layer, the soil sample’s CBR rose from 26% to 30%. 1 results 1
- The series of investigations carried out into the blast disease of oil palm seedlings, a disease of high economic importance, showed that the disease was widespread in nurseries throughout south-western Nigeria, The disease was prevalent between October of the year of planting and March of the following year and appeared to be severest in November and December. The incidence of the disease was lower among seedlings planted into the nursery at the beginning of the rainy season in April than, among seedlings planted in June, July or August. Coconut (Cocos nucifera Linn.) and other palms of economic and ornamental importance, for example, Are ca catechu Linn., Ptychosperma elegans Blume, and Roystonea regia (H. B. K.) Cook also showed heavy blast infection. Pythium splendens Braun (Accession No. IMI 149554) and Rhizoctonia lamellifera Small (Accession No, IMI 149556) were consistently isolated from infected roots. Pathogenicity tests with these fungi showed that the blast disease developed as a result of the co-infection of oil palm seedlings by both fungi, P. splendens was found to be more pathogenic than R. lamellifera under experimental conditions. The infective propagules of P. splendens were found to be more abundant at the ploughline depth of 9 inches than at depths of 1, 3, 6, 12, 15, 18, 24 and 36 inches. The recovery of the fungus from nursery soil by the root baiting technique was high in July-October and low in November-January. These variations in the recovery of the fungus from soil were found to correspond with variations in soil moisture but not with soil temperature. The cultural practice of incorporating organic manure with soil increased while air-drying of soil decreased the recovery value of the fungus from soil. In vitro studies on P. splendens and R. lamellifera showed that the linear growth, sporangial and sclerotial production and germination were better in agar media rich in simple sugars than those deficient in them. The best temperature range for the linear growth, sporangial and sclerotial production and germination was found to be 25-30°C. Longevity of sclerotia of R. lamellifera was highest at a relative humidity value of 95% and at a low temperature of 20°C. Soil temperature in polythene bag planting was found to be positively correlated (r = 0.7758) with the blast disease at the 1% level of significance. There was no statistically significant correlation between the disease and soil temperature or soil moisture in ground bed planting. The incidence of the blast disease was found to be higher in the subsoil and ground bed planting than in the topsoil and polythene bag planting respectively. Shading of nursery seedlings in the dry season particularly from October to December was found to be more effective than Chemical soil treatment with Femasan or Benlate in reducing the incidence of the blast disease. Soil treatment with pentachloro-nitrobenzene appeared to aggravate the disease. Extension work seedlings produced at NIFOR were found to be more resistant to the blast disease than grove palm seedlings. 1 results 1
- This study examines the relationship between CO2 emissions and life expectancy in Nigeria, employing an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to analyse both short-run and long-run effects. The study utilises data spanning from 1986 to 2020, focusing on C02 emissions from different sources—solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels—alongside economic growth indicators and government health expenditures. The findings reveal that CO2 emissions from all sources negatively affect life expectancy in both the short-run and long-run analyses, with emissions from solid and liquid fuels showing particularly strong adverse effects. Conversely, the study finds that higher GDP per capita and increased government health expenditure significantly enhance life expectancy, acknowledging the critical role of economic development and health funding in improving public health outcomes. The study confirms the necessity for comprehensive environmental policies aimed at reducing pollution and promoting cleaner energy alternatives. Additionally, it highlights the importance of economic policies that foster growth and health sector investments, suggesting these as dual avenues for enhancing the well-being and longevity of the Nigerian population. This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence of the direct and indirect effects of environmental and economic factors on public health. It offers valuable insights for policymakers on the importance of integrated strategies that address both environmental sustainability and economic development toward improving life expectancy in developing countries like Nigeria. 1 results 1
