- Endocrine disrupting chemicals cause reproductive dysfunction by interacting with intricate regulation and cellular processes involve in spermatogenesis. This study investigated the probable mechanism of action of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGEE) as an antiandrogenic compound as well as the effects of kolaviron upon co-administration with EGEE in rats. Adult male rats were exposed to EGEE (200 mg kg_1 bw) separately or in combination with either kolaviron [100 (KV1) and 200 (KV2) mg kg_1 bw] or vitamin E (50 mg kg_1bw) for 14 days. Western blot analysis revealed that the administration of EGEE adversely affected steroidogenesis in experimental rats by decreasing the expression of steroid acute regulatory (StAR) protein and androgen-binding protein (ABP). EGEE significantly decreased the activities of 3b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3b-HSD) and 17b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17b-HSD) but markedly increased sialic acid concentration in rat testes. EGEE-treated rats showed significant decreases in plasma levels of luteinising hormone (31%), testosterone (57.1%), prolactin (80.9%), triiodothyronine (65.3%) and thyroxine (41.4%), whereas follicle-stimulating hormone was significantly elevated by 76.9% compared to the control. However, co-administration of kolaviron or vitamin E significantly reversed the EGEE-induced steroidogenic dysfunction in rats. This study suggests that kolaviron may prove promising as a chemoprotective agent against endocrine pathology resulting from EGEE exposure. 1 results 1

- Moringa oleifera plant is a promising nutritional and economic resource for developing countries. Previous studies on moringa plant have focused largely on its medicinal and nutritional uses, with only a few on extraction of oil from its seeds; while solvent and aqueous enzymatic oil extraction methods have been reported for moringa seeds, literature is scarce on mechanical oil expression. This study was conducted to investigate and optimise mechanical oil expression from moringa seeds. Selected physical and mechanical properties of moringa seeds determined using ASABE standards were input parameters for the design and subsequent fabrication of an oil expeller. Central composite rotatable design at 4 factors and 5 levels was adopted for the experiments. Based on moisture content at harvest, preliminary tests and literature, moisture contents (8, 9, 10, 11 and 12% wet basis), heating temperature (50, 60, 70, 80 and 90oC), heating time (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 min) and applied pressures (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 MPa) were chosen. Oil yields were calculated as percentage of input materials; while oil quality criteria such as Free Fatty Acid (FFA), oil impurity and colour were determined using AOAC standard methods. The efficiency of oil expression was obtained in terms of yield and material output. Data analyses were done using multiple linear regression at p = 0.05. Predicted optimum conditions were validated using experimental values. Moisture content of the moringa seeds was 7.31±0.31% (wet basis). The seed length, width and thickness of 8.45±0.98, 7.82±0.92 and 6.41±1.10 mm respectively were used in determining perforation size and barrel clearance. The true and bulk densities of 971.0±0.11 and 662.0±0.03 kgm-3 respectively were useful in determining the expeller capacity and the angle of repose of 21.4±0.75o for hopper, oil and cake troughs design. The peak force, deformation and rupture energy of 67.0±5.47 N, 5.35±0.10 mm and 0.17±0.02 Nm respectively obtained were for determining energy and force requirements of the expeller. Oil yield ranged from 11.42-28.6% with the highest obtained at moisture content of 11%, temperature of 80oC, duration of 30 mins and pressure of 20 MPa. The FFA, oil impurity and colour ranged from 2.42-7.40 mg/KOH/g, 2.12-3.20% and 5.70-7.60 LU respectively and fell within acceptable limits. The expressed and material balance efficiencies were 81.7 and 93.8% respectively. Coefficients of determination (R2) for the oil yield, FFA, oil impurity and colour were 0.77, 0.94, 0.98 and 0.99 respectively. Predicted optimum oil yield of 28.2% at moisture content of 11.30%, temperature of 85.57oC, duration of 27.17 mins and pressure of 19.63 MPa was obtained. Deviations between experimental and predicted values were low and ranged from 0.01-6.20, 0.01-0.68, 0.01-0.12 and 0.01-0.12 for the oil yield, FFA, colour and oil impurity respectively. Moisture content, applied pressure, heating temperature and duration influenced the quality and quantity of oil recovery from moringa seeds using expeller. High oil expression efficiency obtained makes the expeller a potential for moringa oil expression. 1 results 1
- Much of what has been said and written on educational aims has been prescriptive; it has asserted not what they are, but what they should be. That happiness has been prescribed indicates that it is an ideal, which finds expression in a natural phenomenon. Because of its natural and comforting illusions, aims such as this carry a persuasive force of positive connotations which encourages varieties of hyperbolically optimistic assumptions about its effects, in order to avoid these assumptions becoming unchallenged fashionable ideas in educational arena, particularly in the realm of adult education, the need for a careful scrutiny arises. Thus in prescribing Utilitarianism as an aim for adult education.; this study has examined the following issues: (1) The meaning of aims and the justification for the formulation of aims in adult education; (2) Some philosophical theories that form the basis of the aims and objectives of adult education; (3) utilitarianism and education; (4) utilitarianism as an aim of adult education; and (5) Problems associated with the achievement of Utilitarianism in adult education. The above examination was carried out using the instrument of philosophical analysis in the following manner: First, major concepts were picked out for analysis in order to understand the principles by which their uses are determined. Thereafter, some crucial themes subjected to critical analysis so as to eliminate psuedo-problems that are likely to arise at the practice and implementation stages. This led to the clarification of the underlying basic assumptions arising there from, so as to put the real issue in clear perspective. Later, a synthesis of all the positive ideas highlighted in the process of our critical analysis of concepts and issues on the topic was drawn together. The result of this exercise was the restatement of the theory of happiness in the context of adult education. Finally, counter-objections to the new statement was raised in the form of unbiased criticism and answers were provided for such objections. The reason for this task is to dig up any ambiguity that may be hidden in the new formulation. It was found out that Utilitarianism is made up of very many component parts of ethical theories that renders it almost an impossible target to be aimed at. The problem with utilitarian doctrine is that it obscures the identification of appropriate goals and standards of achievement in the education of adults. However, the utilitarian doctrine sees man as primarily concerned with the pursuit of happiness and as such regards the maximisation of happiness and the minimisation of suffering as the supreme of social action. Thus, the promise of a psychological well-being as is contained in the utilitarian doctrine is enough a factor that can attract political as well as Our conceptual analysis reveals it as a system of social economic and academic attention and political decision, as offering a criterion and basis of judgement for administrators as well as a system of personal morality. It is claimed that freedom of thought, autonomous decision making and truth are important elements for human happiness. Without freedom, there can be no genuine interaction with environment, no willing involvement in the life of society; and participation will become an irksome imposition, pedagogically, this points to an education oN, involvement, of participation, of activity and an education that involves discovery. Epistemologically, what is to be known and learnt is to be derived from the data of the product of the learner's experience. As such, it is argued that education should not be seen as the privilege of a few, but as the right and the obligation of all. If this is to be achieved, the government has to restructure its present role concerning adult education. It is therefore recommended that adequate financial provision should be made available for the establishment of adult centres for learning. Adult learning calls for distinct methods; as such, efforts should be made to train adult teachers, and access to the adult centres should be based on individual’s interest and not on government selection and finally, the curriculum of the centres should be structured in such a manner as to focus on the well-being of the learners. 1 results 1

- Previous studies on alms begging in the fields of medicine, psychology, sociology, journalism, and discourse analysis have depicted the phenomenon as a simple activity of requesting by indigent individuals who were often viewed as linguistically deficient. These studies did not adequately account for the context-driven and implicit communicative acts performed by beggars, thus limiting the understanding of this pragmatic phenomenon in society. Therefore, this study examined alms begging in Lagos state with a view to describing its distinctive pragmatic acts and implications. The study applied a modified version of Pragmatic Act theory, which is suitable for describing and interpreting speeches and communicative behaviours in naturally occurring conversational interactions. Using the observation method, speeches and other communicative behaviours of 100 purposively selected beggars were collected from 4 types of locations (public institutions, venues of social events, vehicle stations, and on the streets) in all the 20 local government areas of Lagos State by tape recording and note taking, in order to have a balanced representation of various types of begging behaviours. The data were subjected to pragmatic analysis. Discourse Conditioning Acts (DCAs) and Purpose Execution Acts (PEAs) are the two distinctive but intertwined pragmatic acts found in alms begging. Discourse Conditioning Acts were executed verbally (indirect speech acts) and non-verbally (psychological and physical acts). Beggars‘ indirect speech acts comprised arguing (attention-seeking, affinity negotiating, claiming, denying, complaining, protesting, questioning and threatening), use of politeness (tact, positivism, quietism, and sympathy) and appropriation of idioms. Beggars‘ psychological acts manifested as strategies of mood variation (weeping, sobbing, hissing and laughing), while their physical acts consisted of the strategies of body moves (posing, gazing, beckoning, nodding, bowing, waving and dancing). Both the psychological and the physical acts were extra-linguistic behaviours which beggars used to reinforce their verbal acts in order to emphasise their goal-driven, situation-constrained desperation. Beggars used DCAs to set-up and co-opt others, thereby compelling their target to give alms. Purpose Execution Acts used in obtaining alms, were direct acts, which included three types of direct speech acts (expressives, commissives and directives) together with their corresponding features of (telling, promising and requesting respectively). On the streets, beggars were inclined to use more PEAs than DCAs but in the other types of begging locations (public institutions, venues of social events, and vehicle stations) they use more DCAs than PEAs because of temporal and spatial contextual advantages. While beggars in Lagos state rely on Discourse conditioning acts to set-up and to co-opt potential alms givers, they employ Purpose execution acts to obtain alms from their targets. Thus, begging in the state is a complex, skilled activity which exhibits a considerable level of beggars‘ pragmatic competence. A comparative pragmatic study of alms begging in the Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria is expected to reveal more pragmatic acts performed by beggars. 1 results 1

- The EndSars protests, which occurred in Nigeria in October 2020 employed a great deal of music, which include solidarity songs, popular music, and satirical songs. This article investigates the use of satirical songs in the EndSars protests. The protest, which recorded a massive turnout of protesters in October 2020 across major cities in Nigeria started several months on the social media, most especially Twitter, a microblogging website before it was finally taken to the streets. Anchored on the concept of social movement, it employs the use of participant observation and the social media platforms to gather data which were analysed using content analysis. Apart from being used to ridicule the Nigerian Police which has not engaged Boko-Haram terrorists but instead unleashes terror on harmless youths, satirical songs were used by protesters to express their long piled up anger at the Federal Government of Nigeria. This is due to several unfulfilled campaign promises, as well as the bad state of the nation’s economy which has contributed to the hike in price of food items and other essential commodities, coupled with the growing rate of unemployment. The Nigerian government should use the opportunity created by the massive protests to execute a thorough reform of the Nigerian security establishments and also engage youths more productively in order to enable them to contribute their quota to nation-building. 1 results 1
