Background: Harmful alcohol use is a modifiable risk factor contributing to the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases and deaths and the implementation of policies focused on primary prevention is pivotal to address this challenge. Policies with actions targeting the harmful use of alcohol have been developed in Nigeria. This study is an in-depth analysis of alcohol-related policies in Nigeria and the utilization of WHO Best Buy interventions (BBIs) and multi-sectoral action (MSA) in the formulation of these policies. Methods: A descriptive case study design and the Walt and Gilson framework of policy analysis was utilized for the research. Components of the study included a scoping review consisting of electronic search of Google and three online databases (Google Scholar, Science Direct and PubMed) to identify articles and policy documents with no language and date restrictions. Government institution provided documents which were not online. Thirteen policy documents, reports or articles relevant to the policy formulation process were identified. Other components of the study included interviews with 44 key informants (Bureaucrats and Policy Makers) using a pretested guide. The qualitative data were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Findings revealed that policy actions to address harmful alcohol use are proposed in the 2007 Federal Road Safety Act, the Non-communicable Diseases Prevention and Control Policy and the Strategic Plan of Action. Only one of the best buy interventions, (restricted access to alcohol) is proposed in these policies. Multi-sectoral action for the formulation of alcohol-related policy was low and several relevant sectors with critical roles in policy implementation were not involved in the formulation process. Overall, alcohol currently has no holistic, health-sector led policy document to regulate the marketing, promotion of alcohol and accessibility. A major barrier is the low government budgetary allocation to support the process. Conclusions: Nigeria has few alcohol-related policies with weak multi-sectoral action. Funding constraint remains a major threat to the implementation and enforcement of proposed policy actions.

"This review was carried out to provide a comprehensive overview of efforts toward elimination of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of human immune deficiency virus (HIV) with respect to progress challenges, and recommendations in 21 sub-Saharan African priority countries. We reviewed literature published from 2011 to April 2015 using 3 databases; PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, as well as the 2014 Global Plan Progress Report. A total of 39 studies were included. Between 2009 and 2013, there was a 43% reduction in new HIV infections, the final MTCT rate was reduced from 28% to 18%, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage increased from 11% to 24%. Challenges included poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy, poor linkage between mother—child pairs and post-natal healthcare services low early infant diagnosis coverage, low pediatric ART coverage, and high unmet needs for contraceptive services. Future recommendations include identification of key barriers, health system strengthening, strengthening community involvement, and international collaboration. There has been significant progress toward eliminating MTCT of HIV, but more effort is still needed.

Although controversial, smokeless tobacco use has been implicated as a gateway for smoking. Furthermore, most existing studies did not explore the potential of smokeless tobacco use as a proxy for receptivity to cigarette advertisement rather than an independent predictor of smoking. This study sought to determine the independent effect of smokeless tobacco use, as well as exposure and receptivity to cigarette advertisements on smoking intention among Ghanaian youths. Secondary data obtained from Ghanaian adolescents who participated in the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys conducted during 2006 and 2009 were analyzed using Stata version 13. Data analysis was restricted to current non-smokers and included descriptive and inferential statistics. Intention to smoke for both survey years was associated with: smokeless tobacco use, (OR = 3.74: 95% CI = 2.63–5.32), limited exposure to anti-smoking media messages, (OR = 1.70: 95% CI = 1.09–2.65), being offered cigarettes by tobacco representatives (OR = 2.19: 95% CI = 1.42–3.37) and reporting having both parents (OR = 4.42; 95% CI = 1.84–10.59) or a lot of friends (OR = 3.03: 95% CI = 1.87–4.89) who were smokers. Smokeless tobacco use and exposure to tobacco industry’s promotional activities independently influenced smoking intentions among youths in Ghana. Therefore, complete ban of all forms of tobacco products promotional activities needs to be intensified.

Background: Sexual dysfunction is an important public‑health problem, which is often less reported or explored through opportunistic evaluation during medical consultations. Objective: This study was designed to determine the prevalence and patterns of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) including the sexual quality of life among female patients attending a gynecological outpatients unit in Southwest Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This is a cross‑sectional descriptive study of 146 consenting women who attended the gynecological outpatients’ clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, during the study period. Participants were selected using multistage sampling technique. The survey instruments were previously validated questionnaires such as Sexual Function Questionnaire (SFQ28), Sexual Quality of Life‑Female Questionnaire (SQOL‑F), and the Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection and Resolve (APGAR) score. The results were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 17 and P value was set at 5%. Results: The mean age was 33.8 ± 5.7 years. Most (85.6%) respondents had at least one form of sexual dysfunction. The commonest dysfunction was arousal‑sensation (62.4%) while the least was pain (3.4%). The mean SFQ28 and SQOL‑F scores were 58.0 ± 12.57 and 28.0 ± 11.94, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in the SFQ28 and SQOL‑F scores across sociodemographic factors. Women classified as belonging to dysfunctional family on Family APGAR score similarly had poorer scores for sexual dysfunction (100%, P = 0.016). Conclusion: FSD is common among women attending gynecological outpatients clinic. Managing clinicians should be aware of this condition and proffer appropriate care in addition to the main presenting complaint.

Background: Shisha is a form of smoked tobacco product. Medical trainees arepotential stakeholders in providing accurate information about shisha and discouraging its use. However, few studies have targeted medical trainees to provide much‑needed information for policymaking and planning of programs. Aim: To determine the prevalence and predictors of shisha use among medical and dental students in Ibadan, Nigeria. Subjects and Methods: A cross‑sectional study was conducted among medical and dental students (n = 252) of the University of Ibadan, selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The Global Health Profession Students Survey (GHPSS) questionnaire was used to obtain information about socio‑demographics, shisha and other tobacco use, and knowledge and attitude towards shisha use. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Continuous data were presented using mean and standard deviation, whereas categorical variables were reported as proportions. The association between the outcome variable (shisha use) and independent variables (sociodemographic characteristics, having friends who use shisha) was measured using Pearson’s Chi‑square test, and factors significant (P < 0.05) were entered into the multivariable logistic regression model. Result: The mean age (± SD) was 21.7 (± 3.1) years. Over half [136 (54%)] were males, and most [199 (79%)] were medical students. About 28 (11%) were not aware of shisha, whereas 22 (8.7%) reported they had ever used shisha. The mean knowledge score was 5.6 ± 4.7, and 76 (33.9%) supported shisha use. Positive predictors of shisha use included the male gender [OR: 6.4 (95% CI: 1.76–23.10)] and having a friend who uses shisha [OR: 28.2 (95% CI: 5.49–144.23)]. Conclusion: The prevalence of shisha use among medical and dental students in Ibadan is unacceptably high, although low compared to other countries in similar resource settings. Surprisingly, the students had poor knowledge about shisha, and over a third supported its use, especially males who were more prone to use it. There is a need to design targeted health promotion and education for the students, especially males.

Corona virus is a form of respiratory ailment that ravaged human health and social interaction. Since its emergence and subsequent spread to various countries of the world, various governments, organisations, agencies and individuals have been making frantic efforts to curtail the disease using different media. Prominent among the media being used is social media. However, the preliminary investigation of the researchers indicated that the social media are being wrongly used to disseminate information on the emergence, causes, prevention and curtailment of the disease particularly in a developing country like Nigeria. The need to address these challenges and to drum home the contribution of Library and Information Scientists necessitated this study. Self-structured questionnaire administered at various online fora (NLA, NALISE and individuals) was the instrument used for the collection of data among the library and information scientists (librarians and library and information science educators). Total enumeration technique was employed to cover all the 201 respondents that participated in the survey monkey conducted. The study found that varying social media were being used to disseminate information about COVID-19. It was reported that library and information scientists are playing active role in enlighten masses on the danger of COVID-19, and has established an enduring relationship with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on the importance of library use as change agents. The need for Library and Information Scientists to sustain the use of social media while rendering information services especially in the time of pandemic such as COVID-19 was recommended.
