- "The properties of cast iron grade GL 250 are dependent on the microstructures developed during casting. These microstructures are in turn dependent on the composition of the alloy, type of mould and other numerous casting practice variables such as shake-out time, pouring temperature, mould ambient conditions and inoculating technique. In this work, the effect of silicon content and shake-out time on the grain size (GS) and hardness properties of GL 250 cast iron was studied using a pouring temperature of 14000C and sand mould casting. Using charge materials consisting of pig iron and other additives, GL 250castings containing silicon contents of 1.7, 2.1 and 2.7% were casted using a constant pouring temperature of 14000C, molding sand of specified properties and ambient mould temperature of 320C. Results showed that type A flake type was obtained at 30mins shakeout time for all samples for the C.I composition under study. Increasing shake-out time decreased hardness and increased carbide grain size. Increasing silicon content was observed to increase grain size and reduce free graphite but with resultant decrease in hardness. Two mathematical relationships were derived. One related grain-size to silicon content and shakeout time while the second related Brinnel Hardness to Silicon content and shake-out time. They are: Grain Size=0.40 Si+0.17Shake-out Time-0.15 and BHN=-60.53Si-7.15Shake-out Time+329.35 at 14000C pouring temperature in a molding sand of specified properties and sand mould ambient temperature of 320C. - An attempt has been made in this paper to present a model on the process of social breakdown. The model, developed by Robinson (1978) describes the gradual process of breakdown in social functioning in relation to individuals, families and schools and pays particular attention to the parts various agents of social control play in the prevention of social breakdown. Strategies developed by experts which are directed at individuals, professionals and the government for the prevention of social breakdown are recommended. Thereafter, the strengths and limitations of the strategies are discussed and a conclusion is reached that urgent social work intervention in the schools will help a great deal in preventing social breakdown in schools. 2 results 2
- Ancient Athens was reputed to be a bright intellectual, educational and cultural center all over ancient Greece and beyond. The primary objective of its education was the cultivation of the person's mental, physical and moral qualities, with a view to helping the youth to become cerebral, physically strong, decent and then useful to his city and fellow citizens. The emphasis of Athenian education was preparing well-rounded citizens who were conscious of lofty values behind performing whatever task was asked of them. In contrast with many contemporary schools that focus on short-term outcomes, the Athenian school system took a lifelong view. Educational approach that aims at producing quality leaders and value-oriented people is hard-fought today. The place of proper values in relation to educational goals has been given very little attention by most educational institutions. Attitudes of growing number of parents and teachers are no help. In the attempt to attain personal goals, all eyes seem shut to development of those personal qualities that are most crucial to real community development: honesty, integrity, and the ability to work collaboratively. This article reviews the Athenian approach to education and posits that the values embedded in the Greeks’ basic education dictated the societal outcome of schooling in the ancient time. Then, with a discussion on Pericles’ Funeral Oration, a value assessment is presented. In sum, emphasis is placed on the social need for a value-driven education that involves an entire community in the article to demonstrate that coping effectively and creatively with emerging national and world trends requires more than possession of new knowledge and skills. 2 results 2
