Absence of acquisition of vocational skills on the part of the youths has been considered the bane of the economy of many African societies, particularly Nigeria. The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) schemes were the intervention strategies introduced by the government in its frantic effort to find a lasting solution to youth unemployment. In the light of the above, the study looked at the NDE schemes as a source of provider of employment through youth empowerment schemes in Oyo State, Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the expost-facto type was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised all the youths who have benefited from the vocational skill acquisition and small scale enterprise schemes of the NDE in Oyo State, Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used to select 450 youths who benefited from the vocational skill acquisition scheme and the small scale enterprise schemes of the NDE. The instrument used was a questionnaire tagged "Skill Acquisition and Youth Empowerment Questionnaire" (SAYEQ) with four sub-sections. Two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance and the finding showed that there is significant impact of NDE vocational skill acquisition training scheme on youth empowerment (F(l.398) = 46. 769; P,<.05); there is significant impact of NDE small scale enterprises scheme on youth empowerment (F(l.398) = 99.284; P, <.05). It is recommended that industrial social worker should sensitise the government as to how best they can use these programmes (VSS and SSE) as agents of change in the life, socialisation and economic empowerment of youths within their communities and the nation at large.

Developmental milestones are generally understood to be milestones of neurological development such as neck control, sitting without support, crawling and standing. Child health care providers routinely use normative data on such milestones to evaluate child development. However, there is often a cultural context to expectations of developmental milestones. The goal of this research is to explore the socio-cultural context of developmental milestones in infancy in a Nigerian community. In-depth interview was conducted with 30 mothers enrolled from an infant welfare clinic, southwest, Nigeria The transcripts were coded and analyzed using the Atlas ti 7.0 software package in a combination of thematic and narrative approaches. Mean age of participants was 33.3 (SD 5.1) years, 73% were married, 80% had two or more older children. Mothers expect that a child will be able to sit unaided, crawl and be able to stand by the age of one year. Opinion was divided about if it was possible to predict the age a child will attain a specific milestone. Most mothers reported that the age at which babies attain developmental milestones depends on childrearing practices utilized by the mother. Other factors they perceive as influencing developmental milestones include: having siblings, the age at which siblings and/or parents achieve similar milestones and the environment the child is reared in. Teething was considered an important milestone which has specific culture-bound connotations. Walking was considered one of the most significant milestones, not only indicating normal development but also signifying some independence for both mother and child. In this study of Nigerian mothers, developmental milestones in the first year of life have recognized influencing factors and a number of specific culture-bound associated beliefs. This exploratory study provides insights into intersections between biomedical and cultural concepts of childhood development.

Economic development aims at improving the wellbeing and quality of life of a community by creating and/or retaining jobs, supporting or growing incomes and the tax base. Free trade policies which create a high level of competition in the open market are necessary aids for economic development. On its part, Antitrust is a statutory and jurisprudential provision, through which public authorities preserve general welfare by preventing firms from limiting competition, creating monopolies, and charging excessive prices for their products. It aims to ensure the existence of competitive markets and guarantees that firms operating in the free market economy do not restrict or distort competition in a way to prevent the market from functioning optimally. From the foregoing, this paper examined the Nigerian antitrust regime and its import in the economic advancement of the Nigerian economy. The paper found that in developing countries including Nigeria, there is a paucity of antitrust legislation designed to protect consumers, promote free trade and commerce, and prevent unwholesome and unethical trade practices. With a well operated antitrust framework, Nigeria s economic growth will accelerate and gain better stability as well as increase consumer protection.

Happiness of older adults in rarely studied in the global south like Nigeria compared with the global north. This study assessed the relationship between family dynamics, spirituality, quality of life and happiness among older adults in Nigeria. Cross-sectional study of 378 older adults (≥60 years) were selected. Oxford Happiness questionnaire, the family dynamics, spirituality, and quality of life (QoL) were determined with the Family Relationship Index, spiritual Index of Well-being scale and Quality-of-Life Brief questionnaire respectively. Descriptive and inferential statistics were carried out at α0,05. The mean age was 72,8±7,1 years and 255 (67,5%) were females. Majority 313 (82,8%) were assessed to be happy. Overall, family dynamics, spirituality, and health related QoL were significantly determinants of happiness (p<0,05). Among the women, there was good cohesion in the family dynamics (p=0,031), good health related QoL in the physical domain (p<0,001) and satisfaction with health (p=0,036) were the predictors of happiness. Having higher self-efficacy (p=0,018) and life scheme spirituality (p=0,050) were the predictors of happiness among the men. The present findings showed that most of the older adults were happy. Routine assessment and interventions could increase the feeling of happiness among older adults in the global south.

Quality of life (QoL) of premenopausal women (PW) was assessed using primary data collected between September and December 2011. A 26-item questionnaire (WHO-QoL BREF) was administered to 285 apparently healthy women selected from two local government areas in Ibadan. The scores were categorized into poor (≤79.53) and good (>79.53) QoL. Multiple logistic regressions were used to study factors associated with QoL. The mean score for the overall QoL (OQoL) was 65.18 ± 11.35 (range = 81.25). The Cronbach’s alpha for all domains as well as the OQoL were within an acceptable range. The proportion of women with good OQoL was significantly higher in the urban areas (18.2 percent) than in the rural areas (9.2 percent) (p < .05). The proportion of respondents with good OQoL was significantly higher for women aged < .01). Teenage participants were almost ten times as likely to have a good social relationship than participants above 35 years of age (odds ratio: 9.52; 95% confidence interval: 1.83–49.40). The authors’ results Received June 29, 2013; revised August 18, 2014; accepted August 28, 2014. E-mail: akinokekunle@gmail.com 646 Downloaded by [Texas A & M International University] at 03:05 06 November 2015 Sociodemographic Factors Related to Quality of Life 647 suggest that the WHO-QoL BREF is a reliable instrument for measuring QoL among PW in Nigeria. Younger PW and women in the urban areas were more likely to have good QoL.

Rate of fecundity, life cycle, morphometic characteristics of Ephestia cautella and control were investigated. These were done on sterilized dried date (Phoenix dactylifera) as substrate. Mean daily fecundity of 17 eggs was recorded, while a total of 1117 eggs were laid by 15 adults female E.cautella within 6 days of oviposition in perforated date. In another separate setup the life cycle from egg to adult took 37 ± 1.92 days, under a temperature and relative humidity of 32.5 ± 1 °C and 70 ± 5% respectively. First filial generation (F1) of 1, 217 adults emerged after 30 days of culture using two pairs of E.cautella, from this Fl, 54.7% and 45.3%, were males and females respectively. The morphometric characteristics of E.cautella revealed that female and male adult mean total body length ranges between 8.2 - 10.00mm and 7.9 - 8.9 mm respectively. The control set up on larval stage using varied poly then bag layers of three, two, and one layer with thickness of 0.056mm confirmed that three bags layers was the best treatment. Recorded percentage mortality values of 74.20%, 19.36% and 0.26% were obtained respectively from the set up.

The introduction of school-based adolescent sexuality and life skills education in Nigeria’s formal education sector raises the misgiving that out-of-school youths who constitute more than half of the youth population might be neglected. This study investigated the extent to which out-of-school adolescents have been reached with sexuality education in Nigeria. The study took place in the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, and involved out-of-school adolescents, Non-Governmental Organizations, and community leaders. The qualitative research approaches were employed. Most of the youths had been exposed to sexuality education through seminars, trainings and workshops organized by different organizations. However, states in the south were better served than those in the north. Sexually Transmitted Infections including HIV/AIDS prevention accounted for more than 40% of the content of sexuality and life skills education received by out-of-school adolescents. The programmes have impacted positively on adolescents’ disposition and relationship with the opposite sex, knowledge and skill building.
