- A study was carried out the Evaluation of Effects of Heavy Metals on Abundance and Diversity of Soil Mites in a tropical landfill in Ibadan from April to July 2003. Heavy metal sources from natural and the anthropogenic factors have increased their bioavailability and ecological impacts in the ecosystem. The objective of the study was to assess the impact of heavy metals on soil mites in a tropical landfill site in Ibadan. Five demarcated study plots at the landfill were randomly selected and marked out with a dimension of 10 metres by 10 metres with a Control site of the same dimension located at an elevated location about 100 metres away from the edge of the landfill. Soil samples at a depth of <10 cm were collected from the study plots using a hand trowel on a monthly basis. Buckard –Model of Berlesce-Tullgren funnel extractor was used to extract soil mites while the soil samples were acid-digested for heavy metal analyses using Shimadzu Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. With the exception Pb (1.99 ppm) at Plot 3, all the other mean heavy metals were below that of the Control Plot (6). Soil mite taxa had higher abundance and diversity at the Control plots than in the landfill. Heavy metals Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe concentrations in the study exceeded guideline limits set by the Federal Ministry of Environment (FEPA, 1992). The study concludes that the soil in Aba- Eku landfill in Ibadan is contaminated by heavy metals. 2 results 2

- Background: Physical inactivity contributes to the global burden of non-communicable diseases. The pattern of physical activity in adulthood are often established during adolescence and sedentary behaviours in the early years could influence the development of diseases later in life. Studies on physical activity in Nigeria have focused largely on individual behaviours and the effects of school-based interventions have not been well investigated. The aim of the proposed study is to identify factors influencing; and evaluate the effects of a multi-level intervention on the physical activity behaviours of in-school adolescents in Oyo state, Nigeria. Methods: The study will adopt a cluster randomised controlled trial design and schools will serve as the unit of randomisation. The sample size is 1000 in-school adolescents aged 10–19 years. The study will be guided by the socio-ecological model and theory of reasoned action and baseline data will be obtained through a mixed methods approach comprising a cross sectional survey to document the self-reported physical activity levels coupled with objectively measured physical activity levels using pedometers for a subset of the sample. Other measurements including weight, height, waist and hip circumferences, fitness level using the 20-m shuttle run test (20-mSRT) and blood pressure will be obtained. The schools’ built environment and policy support for physical activity will be assessed using structured questionnaires coupled with key informant interviews and focus group discussions with the school authorities. Baseline findings will guide the design and implementation of a 12-week multi-level intervention. The primary outcome measures are self–reported and 7-day objectively measured physical activity. Other secondary outcome measures are body-mass-index for age, waist-to-hip ratio, cardioresiratory fitness and blood pressure. The association between behavioural factors and physical activity levels will be assessed. Follow-up measurements will be taken immediately after the intervention and 3-months post intervention. Discussion: Physical activity behaviours of adolescents in Nigeria are influenced by multiple factors. There is an urgent need for effective school-based interventions with a potential to improve the physical activity behaviours of adolescents in Nigeria and other low and middle income countries. 1 results 1

- Field study on the influence of fertilizer application on growth and yield components of maize was carried out in 2015 and 2016 at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (I.A.R&T), Ibadan Station. Two maize varieties (ILE-1-OB and TZPBSR-W) were evaluated under three rates of NPK 20-10-10: 0, 50 and 100 kg N ha-1, one rate of Tithonia compost; 10 t ha-1 (representing 10.7 kg N ha-1) and two rates of NPK and Tithonia compost combinations (50 kg N ha-1+10 t ha-1 and 100 kg N ha-1+10 t ha-1) using randomized complete block design (r=3) arrangement. Selected maize plants were assessed for plant height (cm), leaf area (cm2), stem diameter (cm), number of ears per plant, number of rows per cob, number of kernels per row, number of kernels per cob, 1000-kernel weights and grain yield. Various growth and yield components evaluated increased significantly with increased fertilizer application. Combinations of 50 kg N ha-1+ 10 t ha-1 and 100 kg N ha-1+10 t ha-1 enhanced growth and yield performances of maize better than sole applications of 50 or 100 kg N ha-1. Highest grain yield was obtained under 50 kg N ha-1 +10 t ha-1 (5.26, 5.82 t ha-1) and 100 kg N ha-1 + 10 t ha-1 (5.78, 5.91 t ha-1) in 2015 and 2016 respectively. The use of 50 kg N ha-1 inorganic fertilizer in combination with 10 t ha-1 (10.7 kg N ha-1) Tithonia compost adequately enhanced growth and yield performance of maize in the Forest-Savannah-Transition agro - ecology zone of Nigeria. 1 results 1
