- Ancient Athens was reputed to be a bright intellectual, educational and cultural center all over ancient Greece and beyond. The primary objective of its education was the cultivation of the person's mental, physical and moral qualities, with a view to helping the youth to become cerebral, physically strong, decent and then useful to his city and fellow citizens. The emphasis of Athenian education was preparing well-rounded citizens who were conscious of lofty values behind performing whatever task was asked of them. In contrast with many contemporary schools that focus on short-term outcomes, the Athenian school system took a lifelong view. Educational approach that aims at producing quality leaders and value-oriented people is hard-fought today. The place of proper values in relation to educational goals has been given very little attention by most educational institutions. Attitudes of growing number of parents and teachers are no help. In the attempt to attain personal goals, all eyes seem shut to development of those personal qualities that are most crucial to real community development: honesty, integrity, and the ability to work collaboratively. This article reviews the Athenian approach to education and posits that the values embedded in the Greeks’ basic education dictated the societal outcome of schooling in the ancient time. Then, with a discussion on Pericles’ Funeral Oration, a value assessment is presented. In sum, emphasis is placed on the social need for a value-driven education that involves an entire community in the article to demonstrate that coping effectively and creatively with emerging national and world trends requires more than possession of new knowledge and skills. 2 results 2

- Economic Empowerment Programmes (EEPs), which refer to the response of non-governmental and faith-based organisations to the issues of poverty and unemployment, are central to the operations of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM). Previous studies on EEPs in Nigeria concentrated largely on empirical relationship between government intervention programmes and poverty alleviation, the European Union and United Nations Millennium Development Goals, with little attention paid to the inputs made by faith-based organisations. This study was, therefore, designed to examine the EEPs of MFM, with a view to determining the form of EEPs, their strategies, impact and challenges in Lagos State, Nigeria. Robert Barro’s Religious Facilitating Economic Empowerment Theory was used as the framework, while the descriptive design was adopted. Purposive sampling was used to select Alimosho, Agege, Amuwo-Odofin, Ikorodu and Lagos-mainland in Lagos State. These were the five places where the MFM’s EEPs were actively and prominently executed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 130 purposively selected respondents: 10 Programme Coordinators (PCs), 25 Pastors, 15 Church members and 80 EEPs beneficiaries. Five sessions of focus group discussions were conducted: two sessions with 10 PCs, one session with five pastors, and two sessions with 15 beneficiaries, comprising (10 men and 20 women). The data were content-analysed. Three EEPs were identified: skill acquisition, financial scheme and vocational empowerment; and four strategies (vocational training, provision of loans, financial grants and distribution of vocational materials) were adopted in executing the programmes. Skill acquisition employed a vocational training strategy to reach out to 553 farmers, 505 fashion designers, 204 caterers, 301 information technologists, 105 food processors, 264 leather processors and 106 bag makers. Financial scheme deployed a provision of 5% interest loan in the range of N50,000.00 to N500,000.00 and reached out to 120 certified applicants. Also, financial scheme adopted the financial grants method and gave out N24,000,000.00 to 80 merchants and 40 retailers. They claimed that the grants were spent to expand their businesses and pay outstanding shop rents. Also, N8,000,000.00 was given to 80 widows to start their 80 poultry businesses. Vocational empowerment used a vocational materials strategy to reach out to 554 certified beneficiaries: 356 industrial sewing machines, 104 leather sewing machines, 20 soap mixers, 42 catering materials, six bead stoning machines, five cameras, three laptops, two photocopiers, 10 food grinding and processing machines, and six cloth dryers. Through the skill acquisition programme, the rate of unemployment among the church members was reduced from 4,850 to 2,038. The financial scheme programme relieved the beneficiaries of depending on the church for their means of livelihood. The vocational empowerment programme promoted financial autonomy for the concerned MFM members. However, inconsistent follow-up of trainees, non-repayment of loans, mismanagement of funds and selling off of empowerment materials by some beneficiaries were reported as major challenges confronting the execution of each of the EEPs. The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries has contributed to reducing the problem of poverty and unemployment in the Nigerian government through its economic empowerment programmes in Lagos State, Nigeria. 2 results 2

- Education as a tool for national development hinges on adopting the right educational philosophy. The type of education a country adopts is of great importance in the achievement of the goals and philosophies of her education as spelt out in the educational policy. Based on the premise that school children are prone to indoctrination as a result of their impressionable ages, the study examined critically the concept of indoctrination and properly analyse its place in the contemporary Nigerian society. The methodology involves speculating, analysing and prescribing, to explain the concept of indoctrination and education as well as how to eliminate the use of indoctrination in Nigeria's education system. Based on the findings of the study, it is necessary for the teacher to eliminate the use of indoctrination and create a democratic classroom in order to implement the goals and philosophy of Nigerian education. The study recommended that stake holders in the education industry should discourage indoctrination by providing proper guidance and monitoring of schools to ensure compliance. 2 results 2
- Education is an important tool in achieving sustainable peace. Where there is no peace, chaos, destruction of lives and properties are inevitable, there will not be development therefore, stagnation and retrogression will be the likely outcomes. Knowledge is very essential to ensure peace and stability in any society. This can be achieved through the process of education. For a state or society to achieve sustainable peace, the quality and practice of its education becomes very essential. This paper examined the concepts of education and peace. It provides a philosophical insight into the various ways the process of education in Nigeria can be employed to achieve sustainable peace. The study reveals that curriculum, pedagogy and subject approaches are vital in inculcating social values and peace in the society. They are required if the potency and efforts of the process of education in strengthening and promoting peace will not be defeated. It concluded by stating that while proven and effective programmes and curriculum are in place in Nigeria's educational policy, educators have what it takes to demonstrate, impart and help learners to develop and reflect the culture of peace through classroom interactions. It finally suggested ways of promoting peace through education. This include creation of conducive atmosphere for learning, allocation of adequate funds for educational development, discouraging quota System, separating religion from secular education and provision of culturally relevant curriculum 2 results 2

- In formation evaluation, the knowledge of porosity, permeability and fluids saturation are very important in the determination of the hydrocarbon in place. These petro physical properties are necessary to understand the nature of the reservoir and help for proper field development planning. This was aimed at determining the petro physical properties (pore volume, bulk volume, grain volume, permeability and fluid saturation) of a reservoir from core plugs. A total of ten core plugs were used in this work. Archimedes immersion method was used in the determination of the bulk volume. Liquid saturation method was used in the determination of the porosity. The Dean-Stark extraction method was used in the determination of fluid saturation. From the results obtained in the core analysis, the sandstone reservoir has an average porosity of 14.9±5.1%, very good permeability with an average value of 349.77±0.3 mD and a very large water saturation value of 82±0.4%. Consequently the hydrocarbon saturation is approximately 18%. This implies that the formation is not commercially viable to develop based on the hydrocarbon saturation. The study shows that experimental work is one of the valid tools for making informed decisions on the development of a field in the petroleum industry and highlights the importance of the basic petrophysical properties in reservoir management. 2 results 2
