- Background: Individuals, generally, in this environment are known to rate their oral health status favourably despite the presence of oral diseases and conditions, probably due to sub optimal awareness level about oral health, however it is not known if this is the case with members of the dental team especially those who assist the dentist in day to day procedures. Objective: This study assessed the self ratings of oral health status amongst student dental surgeon assistants on clinical rotation at the Dental Centre, UCH, Ibadan. Method: This was a descriptive cross sectional study in which data was obtained with the use of self administered questionnaire and by clinical oral examination. Data obtained included sociodemographic data of respondents, questions assessing self rating of oral health status and evaluation of presence or absence of clinical oral conditions. Results: A total of 54 students with a mean age of 23.9years on clinical posting participated in the study. Nearly all (98.1%) rated their oral health as very good or good and 55.6% perceived a need for oral health care. About 60% had consulted a dentist previously. The mean DMFT was 0.28 and 14.8% of the respondents had a DMFT score > 0. Significant association was found between the global self rating of oral health and perceived need for dental treatment. Conclusion: The perceived need for dental treatment is an important factor in global rating of oral health amongst student dental surgeon assistants 2 results 2

- "Background: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are expected to be in the vanguard, repositioning reproductive health as a central issue in population and development in Nigeria. However, most of them have insufficient knowledge or access to policy and planning processes necessary at engaging effectively with the government. This article highlights the processes and outcome of an intervention aimed at strengthening the capacity of 12 non-governmental organisations on advocacy and policy related activities with emphasis on reproductive health issues. Methods: The study employed a one group, pre and post test study design. Thirty six (36) staff from 12 NGOs was purposively selected and interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire at baseline to assess their knowledge and level of involvement in reproductive health, advocacy and policy issues. In-depth interviews were conducted with 6 officials of the ministries of health and women affairs to document previous reproductive health and policy related collaborative efforts with the NGOs. Baseline findings were used in developing and implementing a capacity building intervention. A post intervention evaluation was conducted to assess the outcomes. Results: All respondents (100 %) had tertiary level education and were from a multidisciplinary background such as nursing (41.7 %) medicine (25 %) and administration (13.9 %). The mean knowledge score on advocacy and policy issues at pre-test and post test was 39.1 ± 17.6 and 76.2 ± 14.2 respectively (p = 0.00). Participants reported making use of advocacy methods and the three most utilized were Phone calls (28.1 %), Face to Face meetings (26 %) and networking with other organisations for stronger impact (17.1 %). The outcome of their advocacy efforts include the provision of free air time by a television station to educate the populace on maternal health issues, donation of landed property to build a youth friendly centre, donation of a blog site for disseminating information on Reproductive health issues and training of other staff of their organisations on advocacy activities. The major challenges experienced by staff of the NGOs were financial (89 %) and time constraints (11 %). Conclusion: Empowered non-governmental organisations can effectively advocate for the implementation of reproductive health policies and programmes. 1 results 1
- "Interest is growing daily on the utilization of bamboo as a reliable supplement to wood in furniture production to mitigate the scarcity of wood raw material supply. This study explored the viability of recycling bamboo recovered from scaffold into intermediate raw material for indoor furniture production. Strips were processed from the recovered Bambusa vulgaris Schrad and were subjected to conventional treatment methods with some modification to simplify the treatment. The durability of the treated strip was evaluated in accordance with ASTM D2017. A storage shelf was designed and fabricated using laminates made from the bamboo strips. The diameter and wall thickness of the recovered bamboo culms ranges from 6.00cm -10.00cm and 10.00mm- 12.70mm respectively. The result shows that ordinary soaking of the strips in water for 3 weeks could make the strips to be sufficiently resistant to termite attack but fairly resistant to powder post beetle. Application of kerosene as a secondary treatment will make the resistance of the bamboo strip effective to powder post beetle. A Complete-Knock-Down (CDK) Magazine shelf suitable for office use was fabricated using road side carpentry workshop tools. This study was able to recycle Bambusa vulgaris recovered from scaffolding material into suitable raw material input for the manufacturing of indoor furniture." 1 results 1
- "The study investigated the Mathematics achievement of senior secondary school students in Mathematics in Saki using Project Based Learning Method (PBLM) in enhancing the Mathematics achievement in senior Mathematics among senior secondary school students in Saki. To ascertain the degree of treatment efficacy, a randomised sample of 45 senior secondary school students with 30 and 15 participants each from two different senior secondary schools in Saki West Local Government areas in Saki were selected for the purpose. The randomised control trial design was employed, and a randomized randomised sample that undertook training in PBLM and a control group were used. The instrument used for data collection is Mathematics achievement tests sampled from the National Examination Council (NECO) for 2017 & 2018 objective Mathematics papers. Since the instrument was standardised test prepared by Public Examination body there is no need for revalidation. A pair of pre-test and post-test data was obtained from each participant who formed the basis of the findings using ANCOVA for data analyses. This study present the empirical application of four statistical methods (pre and post-treatment scores with analysis of covariance, post-test scores, difference in pre and post-treatment scores and percent difference in pre and post-treatment scores), using data from a randomised controlled trial of post-test among the senior secondary school students on Mathematics achievement using Project Based Learning Method (PBLM), with and without PBLM treatment, a Randomized Controlled Study trials. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine the effectiveness of treatment, to adjust for baseline measures and to provide an unbiased estimate of the mean group difference of the post-treatment scores in Mathematics achievement among the participants used. Robustness tests were done by comparing ANCOVA with three comparative methods: the post-treatment scores, change in scores, and percentage change from baseline. All the four methods showed similar direction of effect; however, ANCOVA (93.503; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 89.332, 97.668; p = 0.019) and the post-treatment score (94.100; 95% CI: 89.733, 98.467; p = 0.001) method provided the highest precision of estimate compared with the change score (38.300; 95% CI: 34.215, 42.385; p = 0.001) and percent change (68.462; 95% CI: 60.358, 76.565; p = 0.001). The empirical studies provide the best statistical estimation for analyzing the best statistical estimation for analyzing continuous outcomes requiring covariate adjustment. Our empirical findings support the use of ANCOVA as an optimal method in both design and analysis of trials with a continuous primary outcome. 1 results 1
- "This study investigated parents, teachers, and undergraduate students' perception of the relationship between a well-managed gender and youth education and sustainable national development. The study was an ex-post facto research. Stratified sampling was used to select the subjects as follows: 100 parents (50 from each sex), 200 hundred teachers (100 males and 100 females) and 300 final year undergraduates (150 from each gender) making 600 subjects. A 44-item questionnaire was developed and validated by the researchers at 0.71 KR-20 reliability coefficient and construct validity coefficient of 0.68 cronbach Alpha. The data were analysed using Pearson's Product Moment statistics. The results of 0.77(parents), 0.88(teachers) and 0.87(students) at 0.01 level of significance, for the youth education was higher than that of the girl-child education of 0.64(parents), 0.81 (students) and 0.85(teachers). Findings showed that religion had been a major barrier to the girl-child education in certain parts of the country. Also the differences between the teachers' and the students' perception of the relationship existing between the girl-child education and sustainable national development can be attributed to the differences in the levels of education and experience. Although the results showed that all respondents agreed that""youth education contributes immensely to sustainable national development but most of them equated youth education to boy-child education and are yet to accord the girl child education the same level of importance. It was thus recommended that governments must be in the vanguard of education provision for all while girlchild education must be accorded the requisite priority. Governments and other stakeholders should be vigorously involved in the provision of quality and holistic education for all irrespective of sex and religion. Those charged with the responsibility of managing the education sector should be given managerial training from time to time, to equip them with modern techniques for optimal performance." 1 results 1
- A student’s abilitiy to read and understand written texts is one of the fundamental skills that enable students to succeed in his academics. However, far many students in Nigerian schools with learning disabilities reading comprehension is the major deficiency. This study, investigated the effectiveness of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) in improving reading comprehension of secondary students with learning disabilities. The study employed a pre-test, post-test, control group, quasi-experimental research design. The design utilised a 2x2x2 factorial layout. Simple random sampling technique was used to select One Hundred (100) Junior Secondary Class 2 from two junior public schools. The presence of different levels (ranging from mild to severe) of learning disabilities was the major criterion far this selection. Screening was conducted with the Myklebust Rating Scale (r = 0.76). Participants in the experimental group were exposed to five weeks of reading comprehension training using the directed reading thinking activity strategy. The control group was not treated. Three null hypotheses were formulated, while data collected were analysed using t-test statistics. The results showed that participants exposed to the directed reading thinking activity strategy performed better than their counterparts in the control group. Thus, since the directed reading thinking activity strategy was found to be superior to the conventional method. 1 results 1
