- "An assessment was carried out of variability in fruit and seed characteristics and the effects of seed source and seed size on germination of Tetrapleura tetraptera from four sources in South-Western Nigeria. The sources were Emure-Ekiti (Lat. 7°26’N and Long. 5°30’E); Ikoyi-Ue (Lat. 8°15’N and Long. 4°49’E); Osogbo (Lat. 7° 46’ and Long 4°35’E) and Sapele (Lat. 5°55’N and Long. 5°46’E). Fruit length and diameter were determined using a string and a metre-ruler, while fruit and seed weights were measured with an electronic balance and the number of seeds per pod was counted. Seeds were categorised into two, based on sources and size classes for germination studies. Seed dormancy was broken using concentrated Tetra-oxo-sulphate VI acid. The seeds were thoroughly washed in distilled water before sowing in germination boxes filled with top soil.Significant variations were observed both in fruit and seed characteristics and in germination. Mean pod length ranged from 21,60cm to 24.39cm with coefficient of variation of 5.90%. Pod diameter ranged from 3.95cm to 7.5cm with 6.9% coefficient of variation. Mean pod weight ranged from 34.94g to 57.46g with coefficient of variation of 11.11%. The number of seeds per pod varied between 10.46 and 14.04 with coefficient of variation of 14.92%. Seed length varied between 9.12 and 9.78mm with coefficient of variation of 2.58%, while seed diameter and seed weight ranged from 6.26mm to 7.00mm and 1.50g to 1.76g respectively. The coefficient of variation for seed diameter was 7.05% while that of seed weight was 6.91%. Germination pattern also varied according to seed size classes and sources. The largest size class (10.7mm+) gave the highest cummulative germination percentage of 88.2% and a germination rate of 12.52 seeds per day. The size class 6.0 - 7.5mm gave the lowest cummulative germination percentage of 57.5% and a germination rate of 8.19 seeds per day. Seeds from Ikoyi-Ile had a total germination percentage of 92.8% and a germination rate of 12 seeds per day. The lowest total germination of 56.6% was recorded for Osogbo. Interaction effects between mother trees and seed source were significant. There was, however, no significant interaction between seed size and seed source" 1 results 1
- "The potential of Cottonseed cake (CSC) at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% replacement for Soybean cake (SBC) as an alternative protein source in chicks was investigated. One hundred and eighty Anak broiler chicks at day old were divided into twelve groups and randomly assigned to the five dietary treatments with three replicates per treatment. The feeding trial lasted for four weeks at the teaching and research farm of the university of Ibadan Nigeria. Feed intake revealed that chicks fed cottonseed cake-based diets had higher consumption when compared to those fed control. Though feed conversion showed significant differences (P<0.05) it did not follow a particular trend. There were significant (P<0.05) differences in protein utilization across the treatments. The highest protein efficiency ratio (PER) values were obtained with the birds in diet 3 (50% CSC) with values of 2.78 and 2.84 respectively while diet 5 (100% CSC) gave the lowest value of 1.20. Results showed there were significant (P<0.05) differences in weight gain from the 1st week to the 411' week. Birds fed diet 4 having 75% CSC replacement for SBC had the same value (220g) with the control (Diet 1) Mortality was low in all the treatments and a range of 1-2 % mortality was recorded during the study. - "The production of acha and cowpea are the complementary food and are produced in large quantities in Nigeria, which are the major sources of protein and carbohydrate respectively. The study was proposed on developed high protein-energy complementary foods from the blends of cowpea and acha using extrusion cooking. Cultivars of cowpea (IT90K-277-2) and acha (cream colour) were selected and milled into flours. Using the response surface methodology, the blends of acha and cowpea flours at 70:30 and 60:40 respectively were extruded using a single screw extruder at barrel temperature of 120-160•C and feed moisture content of 18-25% (d.b). The proximate composition and trypsin inhibition activity of the extrudates and blends were determined, while compressive forces were determined using testometric analysis.The protein content increased from 7.98% for acha flour to 16.03% and 18.73% for blends containing 30.0% and 40.0% cowpea respectively. Trypsin inhibition activity of the blends decreased by 76.0% to 92.1% as a result of the increasing extrusion temperature and feed moisture content. Compression forces at the peak, break and yield of extrudates' ranged from 148.3 to 886.4 N, 140.2 to 882.5 N and 96.3 to 226.4 N respectively. Extrusion cooking parameters (barrel temperature, feed moisture content and feed composition) significantly affected the quality of the cowpea-acha blends." 1 results 1
