- Garcinia kola Heckel (Guttiferae) seed, has found use in folkloric medicine of Southern Nigeria for the treatment of toothache and prevention of dental caries. The crude ethanolic extract, chromatographic fractions and isolated constituents of Garcinia kola seed against clinical strains of dental-caries-causing and related microorganisms is being evaluated. Antimicrobial evaluations were done by testing different concentrations of the crude extract, vacuum liquid chromatographic (VLC) fractions and pure isolates against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus viridans and Staphylococcus aureus in already set blood agar with gentamicin as the reference standard. The zones of inhibition and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined as appropriate. Fraction N, eluted with (hexane: ethyl acetate 70: 30), exhibited the highest activity with MIC’s of 1.50 mgml⁻¹ and 0.33 mgml⁻¹ while the pure isolates 1 (cycloartenol) and 2 (24-methylenecycloartanol) gave MIC’s of 0.17 mgml⁻¹ and 0.38 mgml⁻¹ against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus viridans respectively. Isolate 3 (garcinianin) gave MIC of 1.0 mgml⁻¹ against Streptococcus mutans but there was no significant activity against Streptococcus viridans and Staphylococcus aureus. The results provide justifications for the folkloric use of Garcinia kola Heckel (Guttiferae) for dental caries-related health problems while the isolated compounds may also serve as templates for future antimicrobial drug development. 2 results 2

- There are indications that the domestic demand for cassava particularly as staple food may in no time outweigh that of the industrial sector, except contract and non-contract farming entrepreneurs operate within the framework of sustainable agriculture. The study thus examines the effects of contract farming scheme on cassava production in Oyo State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling technique was used. Oyo and Ibadan/Ibarapa zones were randomly selected from the four Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) in Oyo State. From the 307 registered farmers under the contract farming arrangement in the selected zones, 20% (62) were randomly selected, while equal number were selected from the list of their non-contract counterparts in two of the four agricultural zones of the state. Data were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. Average farm size was 14.56 ± 3.43 and 2.14 ± 0.43 acres for Contract and non-contract farmers respectively with respective average output of 6 and 5.4 tonnes per acre. Majority financed the farm through loan as average distance from home to farm is 5.88km. Hired labour was prominent for farm operations and land for farming is through the community. Contract and non-contract farmers differed significantly in their level of production enterprise (t=19.219, p=0.000). Promotion of contract farming through a well laid out agricultural extension outreach will ensure constant and consistent growth in the agricultural sector and consequently alleviate poverty among rural household in Oyo State. 2 results 2
- "The paper examines the potential roles of non-timber forest products in sustainable forest management in Nigeria. It is observed that there are numerous non-timber forest products in the various ecological zones of the country. Presently the situation of the nations’ forests is far from being sustainable. Case's of illegal felling, forest encroachment, poaching and outright de-reservation of gazetted forest reserves are very rampant. The forest reserve communities have become very hostile and uncooperative towards forest management and conservation programmes. Multiple-use forest management has been found very useful in achieving sustainable forest management in many parts of the world. The country’s rich biodiversity, prevalence of consequences of environmental mismanagement, insecurity of forest properties, and the nature of traditional indigenous land resources management systems in the country all provide a useful platform upon which the development of multiple- use forest management could be built. Since Multiple-use forest management involves the management of forests such that all its resources are considered in planning the management, it is obvious that non-timber forest products have a crucial role to play in sustaining the resources of our forests. To make progress in this direction, it is necessary to first carry out a needs survey of forest communities, undertake detailed resource inventory, hold stakeholders’ meetings and engage in both socio-economic and ecological studies so as to evolve a socially acceptable, economically viable and ecologically sound management technique." 1 results 1

- A top-bottom approach where local problems are treated in isolation has proven ineffective in achieving sustainable development. The need for inclusive approaches to managing the demand for arable lands, forest resources, and the problems of resource exploitation and climate change calls for local understanding of these elements’ interrelationship. Understanding the interrelationships among climate change, agriculture, and the ecosystems in different agroecological zones in Nigeria was the purpose of this chapter. Deforestation and forest degradation analysis approach was utilized. One state and two forest communities from each of the rainforest, savannah, and mangrove agroecological zones were purposively focused in this chapter based on forest distribution and cover. Focus group discussions involving 252 male and female farmers using 30 years as reference were used to garner relevant information. Climate variation caused a slight modification in cropping schedules of farmers due to prolonged dry season, mainly in the savannah region. Farmers engaged in mixed farming and also cultivate more hardy crops like cassava in response to climate uncertainties. Especially in the mangrove and savannah, ecosystem components such as agriculture and population showed increasing trends over the years as forest cover reduces. Downward trend in charcoal production was limited to mangrove and rainforest zones as fishing and hunting becomes vulnerable livelihoods across the zones. The degree and progression of climate change effects on the ecosystem in Nigeria agroecological zones is largely comparable and have both desirable and adverse livelihood outcomes. Affordable insurance policy, credit, agri-inputs, favorable forest regulatory framework, and youth empowerment supports would enhance sustainable adjustment to climate change. 1 results 1
