| Summary: | This study examines how Sudanese refugee women, who arrived in Faisal, Cairo, after April 2023 experience gender-based violence (GBV). The research investigates the types of GBV these women encountered during their journey from Sudan to Cairo, how their gender roles changed in the asylum context, and their vision for the future regarding safety and support. A qualitative approach was employed, using in-depth interviews with four Sudanese refugee women, complemented by field notes and observations made during visits to the Faisal neighborhood. The analysis focused on the personal stories shared by the women, highlighting the various forms of violence they experienced, including psychological and economic violence. A significant finding was the exploitation these women faced by smugglers during their migration journey, where they were financially coerced and subjected to unsafe and degrading conditions.
The research also explores how the disruption of traditional gender roles in the asylum setting created new challenges and power dynamics, with some women experiencing shifts in familial relationships. Observations from the Faisal neighborhood provided additional context to understand the broader socio-economic environment that shaped the women’s experiences. Finally, the study discusses the women’s perspectives on their future, including their hopes for safety and protection. This study contributes to understanding the intersection of gender and displacement, offering valuable insights into the challenges faced by Sudanese refugee women. |
