Summary:Media literacy is an essential skill in today’s digital environment (Khoirunnisa, Udiana, & Zahra, 2025), especially in conflict-affected societies where misinformation and propaganda spread rapidly through social media platforms (Uzochukwu et al., 2025). In Yemen, the ongoing conflict has weakened the education system and reduced access to reliable information, which increases university students’ vulnerability to misleading, biased, and inaccurate media content (Moharram, 2026). Despite the recognized importance of media literacy education, academic research on this topic remains very limited in Yemen, particularly in Hadhramout Governorate. This study addresses this research gap by examining the current state of media literacy education in Hadhramout Governorate through a case study of the Media Department at Hadhramout University. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. It is guided by two theoretical frameworks: Potter’s Cognitive Theory of Media Literacy and Constructivist Learning Theory. The research assesses the level of media literacy among media students at Hadhramout University and investigates faculty members’ understanding of media literacy and the ways they incorporate related concepts into their teaching practices. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires administered to students and designed based on Potter’s Cognitive Theory. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with faculty members, guided by Constructivist Learning Theory. By integrating findings from both data sources, the study provides a clear assessment of media literacy education within the Media Department at Hadhramout University. The results aim to support practical recommendations for improving media literacy education in the department and contributing to the future development of media education in Yemen.
