Boateng, Rita A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirements For The Award Of Master Of Arts In Sociology. Discipline in school means more than obeying and following school guidelines, rules and code of conduct in school but entails the students‟ aptitude to distinguish what is right or bad and what is accepted behaviour. This study sought to examine the approaches schools adopted in students discipline within senior high schools, find out students attitude towards the various disciplinary measures and to examine the effects of disciplinary measures on students‟ academic performance. Two schools within the Ashanti Region were selected for the study. The study involved a sample size of 340 respondents consisting of 314 students and 26 teachers. Students were selected using simple random sample and the teachers were selected purposively. Self-administered questionnaires were presented to the students for the data collection whilst interview was conducted with the teachers. The study found that the approaches adopted in disciplining students in schools included; weeding, canning, suspension, sending students to the disciplinary committee, scrubbing, staying in class for longer hours whilst the rest have gone, changing sitting positions of students, kneeling, and standing behind the class, withdrawal of privileges of indiscipline students, dismissal, signing a bond for their indiscipline act, detention and isolation. The study further found that students have negative attitude toward discipline and at times feel that disciplinary measures do not protect their interest. Lastly the study concluded that some disciplinary methods do not promote a healthy school environment as it makes students miss out on instructional contact hours. However, discipline in schools was essential for effective teaching and learning and hence, lead to improved performance among students. It was recommended that disciplinary measures that reflect the students‟ best interest should be the first and most important factor to consider when giving disciplinary measures to students. Disciplinary measures that go to the disadvantage of the students should be avoided. There should be counselling for indiscipline students as against suspension.
