Baffour, Janet Antwi A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirement For The Degree Of Master Of Arts (MA) Sociology. The main objective of the study is to determine the factors that influence behaviour of youth sports betting in Ghana. This research employed both the quantitative and qualitative method of study and employed cross-sectional design as the main framework for assembling, compilation and analysis of data. The target population of the study was the youth which included people within the Kumasi Metropolis specifically Asafo, Ash-Town and Bantama. Convenience and purposive sampling technique were used to select 296 youth for the study. Both primary and secondary source of data were used. Questionnaires and semi-structured interview guide were used to collect data. The study found out that most gamblers were from families in which either one of their siblings or parents was engaging in gambling. It further noted that social factors in the study area affect gamblers’ attitude: these factors are; availability of gambling centers and other gamblers, interaction between youth and their peers, entertainment and recreation, socialization and the desire for competition ushered the youth in gambling in the study area. Based on the findings it was recommended that older family members who engage in gambling should change their attitude toward gambling. Again, it was recommended that community leaders should establish recreational centers to serve as alternative means of entertainment for the youth.
