This study explores the potential of concentrated solar thermal technologies for high temperature industrial processes in South Africa which makes a significant contribution to global Greenhouse Gas emissions and it whose electricity supply is under pressure. It is thus required to explore reliable technologies that can provide low-carbon renewable energy at competitive costs. Few studies have investigated the economic and other benefits of using solar-generated heat for large-scale industrial process heat applications to replace or support conventional heating methods. Parabolic trough collectors are the most mature technology for both power and process heat, or steam generation.
