Includes bibliographical references. Colonic self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) are proven to be safe and effective in the management of selected cases of malignant colonic obstruction. Since 2005, we have used endoscopic decompression with SEMS as the primary treatment of all patients with left-sided obstructing colorectal cancer, in the absence of perforation.
