Includes bibliographical references (leaves 119-126). Energy is a key factor in economic growth and also central to meeting basic socio-economic goals. The use and production of energy in South Africa is associated with greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions and pollution problems. Gauteng‘s residential sector is faced with a slowing rate of electrification due to high in-migration rates and high pollution levels in households that use coal to meet their energy needs. This study analyses whether the energy policies in Gauteng can help to steer Gauteng‘s residential sector toward sustainable use of energy by reducing the energy demand and associated GHG and pollutants emissions.
