Titanium and its alloys are among the most important advanced materials in use today due to attractive properties such as high strength to weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. However, the cost of titanium production is high, mostly due to the high cost of extraction. This has led to investigations of potentially lower cost methods such as near-net shape powder metallurgy techniques. One approach, which has the potential of producing the lowest cost powder available, involves converting titanium waste machine turnings to powder using the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process. The focus of this project is directed at this approach where a ball milling process is used to simultaneously hydrogenate and crush the titanium turnings into titanium hydride powder. 2015-01-10T13:34:44Z 2015-01-10T13:34:44Z 2012 Master Thesis Masters MSc http://hdl.handle.net/11427/11989 eng application/pdf Department of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment University of Cape Town
