A description of socio-economic conditions to the children, to compare the health status of HIV positive children, to establish and compare developmental quotients of children across two care-giving environments and compare performance of children with and without HIV, to determine to what extent developmental quotient changes over a six-month period and establish which factors predict performance. A descriptive, analytical, prospective, longtudinal study design was used. 44 children participated in the study at baseline. The children were recruited from four institutions in Cape Town and from community outreach programmes supporting foster parents.
