Includes bibliographical references (leaves 190-195). The crushing and energy absorption characteristics of thin-walled specimens consisting of single, welded and two axially stacked plate-divided mild steel square tubes were investigated by the performance of numerous quasi-static and dynamic axial crushing tests and FEM (finite element modeling). The simulation was carried out using the finite element package ABAQUS/Explicit 6.7.1. Lengths of the specimens ranged from 300mm to 1700mm encompassing the three main modes of buckling of square tube specimens; namely progressive, global bending and transition between the buckling modes. 2014-07-31T11:18:52Z 2014-07-31T11:18:52Z 2008 Master Thesis Masters MEng http://hdl.handle.net/11427/5478 eng application/pdf Department of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment University of Cape Town
