Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for the prevention of pain and inflammation. These symptoms are brought about by the action of biochemicals such as prostoglandins, which result from the conversion of a fatty acid, known as arachidonic acid, by the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) in the presence of oxygen. NSAIDs act on this biochemical pathway by inhibiting the COX enzyme, thereby exerting their analgesic effect. Since, however, the solubility and bioavailability of NSAIDs are generally poor, encapsulation of these drugs in cyclodextrins was attempted in order to alter their dissolution properties. 2014-08-13T14:26:10Z 2014-08-13T14:26:10Z 2004 Master Thesis Masters MSc http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6303 eng application/pdf Department of Chemistry Faculty of Science University of Cape Town
