In this project a series of multinuclear complexes were successfully prepared and characterised using an array of analytical techniques. The use of nitrogen-donor ligands, in particular pyridine and ferrocenyl derivatives thereof was examined. Two main approaches were taken in the preparation of the ferrocenylpyridines: i. The ferrocenylpyridines were systematically studied by varying the position of substituents along the pyridyl ring in the 4-,3-and 2-positions. ii. The effect of placing spacer groups between the ferrocenyl group and the pendant pyridine was examined. iii. The ligands were prepared with a system of conjugated π bonds, allowing for an electronic pathway within the ligand. 2014-10-18T06:06:02Z 2014-10-18T06:06:02Z 2003 Doctoral Thesis Doctoral PhD http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8616 eng application/pdf Department of Chemistry Faculty of Science University of Cape Town
