In the modern age of rapidly evolving technology integration into the daily functions of nations, South Africa (SA) is at a crossroads where it must decide how best to integrate these advanced technologies into its urban planning efforts. This paper investigates the potential of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies and Smart City (SC) principles in the context of South African planning. The 4IR is characterized by the integration of digital technologies into various sectors and offers transformative opportunities for urban planning and development across the globe. This study combines a thorough analysis of existing literature with interviews conducted with planners from the country of SA to assess the specific challenges and opportunities faced by South African planners, to gauge the future potential. The findings of this research highlight that while there is significant potential for 4IR technologies and smart city principles in SA planning, there are numerous limitations that need to be addressed. South Africa currently faces limited access to advanced infrastructure, a growing digital divide among citizens, and inadequate technical skills. These limitations hinder the effective implementation of 4IR technologies in urban planning. Based on these findings, the study suggests that SA should focus on policy development and capacity building as a priority before fully embracing 4IR technologies. By establishing a more robust policy framework and investing in training and skill development programs, SA can create an enabling environment for the successful adoption of 4IR technologies and smart city principles. This approach ensures that technological advancements are effectively utilized to address urban challenges while ensuring equitable access and digital inclusion for all citizens. In conclusion, this research exhibits the need for a balanced approach to SA planning, emphasizing the importance of policy development and capacity building of its planners alongside its planned implementation of 4IR technologies. By addressing the technological limitations and prioritizing policy frameworks, SA can fully leverage the opportunities and benefits fully from the transformative potential of 4IR technologies and SC principles to create sustainable and inclusive cities for its citizens.
