This study explores which practical-theological principles are helpful for establishing and promoting intentional character formation in Italian evangelical churches. The background is the limited engagement with character formation in both theological discourse in Italy and everyday congregational life. The aim is to provide recommenda-tions to help leaders foster character development within their communities. The theological foundation summarizes key insights from selected biblical metaphors of character growth, the spiritual formation movement, and New Testament virtue ethics. Character formation is described as a teleological developmental process rooted in divine salvation. Believers participate in this transformation through spiritual disciplines, belong to communities with social practices and specific narratives, and experience suffering as character-shaping events. Building on this foundation, the first step of the study examines the contribution of selected learning theories to character formation within the congregational context. Andragogy emphasizes experiential and problem-oriented growth. Transformative learning highlights the importance of both personal and dialogical reflection, as well as disorienting dilemmas. In contrast to these individualistic views, Heywood’s Kingdom Learning stresses communal growth within the church as a community of practice. The spirituality types approach shows the diversity of spiritual disciplines and the significance of holistic growth. These learning insights are contextualized within the historical and cultural background of Italian evangelical congregations. Their history is marked by persecution, limited freedoms, and a lack of unifying structures. Evangelicals are often seen as “foreign” by the predominantly Catholic population. Italian culture balances Western and concrete-holistic elements, combining individualistic and collectivist traits, emotionality, fear of losing face, hierarchical tendencies, and mistrust of state institutions. In the synthesis, a practical-theological model is proposed to establish and promote character formation among evangelical believers in a culturally appropriate manner. This concept draws on the symbolic metaphor of the family, influential individuals within networks, theological education, and local church structures. Furthermore, religious practices and social activities play a key role in fostering trusting relationships in which theological reflection is exercised, spiritual disciplines are practiced, and a culture of grace can be cultivated.
