This study examines the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Protocol on Investment as a potential catalyst for reforming Cameroon’s investment framework to promote sustainable development. Amidst global calls for aligning international investment agreements (IIAs) with the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs), the research is motivated by the reality that Cameroon’s investment framework, namely the Investment Charter of 2002 and the Law on Private Investment Incentives of 2013, prioritizes fiscal incentives and investor protection but fails to incorporate binding sustainability provisions. This omission creates a regulatory gap that undermines Cameroon’s ability to align with the emerging regional obligations.Through a qualitative doctrinal and comparative legal analysis, the study interrogates the sustainability provisions of the AfCFTA Protocol, critiques the deficiencies of Cameroon’s domestic laws, and draws lessons from other African states such as Rwanda, Togo and Zambia which are making conscious efforts in integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards into their investment frameworks. The findings reveal that Cameroon’s legal regime remains outdated and misaligned with both regional and global sustainability agendas. In contrast, the AfCFTA Protocol on Investment represents a change in thinking by embedding sustainable development into the core of investment governance. The study recommends comprehensive reforms to Cameroon’s investment laws, including the incorporation of ESG obligations, alignment with AfCFTA provisions, and the establishment of robust institutional mechanisms for monitoring compliance. This research contributes to the body of knowledge in international law by demonstrating how regional investment protocols can serve as instruments for domestic legal reform and sustainable economic transformation. It also provides a policy-relevant roadmap for Cameroon to enhance its attractiveness as an investment destination while safeguarding environmental and social priorities.
