This dissertation investigates and examines the systemic nature of voter suppression and disenfranchisement in Zimbabwe. It puts forward a proposition that electoral credibility and governance legitimacy in Zimbabwe have been consistently undermined by an aggregation of compromised institutions, flawed and repressive legislation, and tactical political maneuvers. Through an elaborate analysis of the legal and institutional frameworks governing elections, the study identifies fundamental deficiencies within the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and the Electoral Act. Key findings expose the ZEC’s perceived lack of independence, linked to the absence of a transparent and independently auditable voters’ roll, which has facilitated the disenfranchisement of specific demographic groups, thereby contributing to a profound crisis of electoral trust. The research concludes by recommending urgent and comprehensive institutional and legal reforms, including the transparent appointment of ZEC commissioners and the amendment of the Electoral Act to safeguard the right to vote for all citizens. Ultimately, this study posits that the future of Zimbabwe’s democracy is contingent upon the successful implementation of these reforms to restore public confidence in the electoral process.
