This dissertation is a feminist literary study that explores the complex power dynamics between men and women in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The aim of this research is to focus on how female characters navigate their positions within a patriarchal mythological framework. Through a close analysis of chosen episodes from the Metamorphoses, it examines how women are disempowered by societal structures, in the form of authority figures such as gods and kings, but also how they are able to assert agency, particularly through acts of resistance and vengeance. By interrogating moments of both subjugation and empowerment of specific women, this study reveals a nuanced portrayal of female autonomy in a text that simultaneously reinforces and challenges traditional gender hierarchies. The female figures I focus on are Callisto, Juno, Hecuba, Telethusa, Iphis, Isis, Philomela, and Procne. These characters encounter various forms of subjugation and oppression within a patriarchal society, and display differing levels of resistance and empowerment. The distinct circumstances they face enable a multifaceted analysis of gendered power dynamics from various perspectives.
