Social history SOMAFCO Thesis (PhD (History))--University of Pretoria, 2025. This study considers and constructs a history of SOMAFCO from the inside, from the point of view of those who were at the institution. These are the graduates of SOMAFCO who were there when the school was started in 1978 through its fifteen-year lifespan until it was closed in 1992 due to the seismic shifts in South African politics as initiated by President FW de Klerk in February 1990. The study considers the roots and reasons for the exiles leaving their homeland and the routes they followed to get to SOMAFCO in Morogoro, Tanzania. The study also interrogates the exiles’ experience in exile at SOMAFCO and their journey from SOMAFCO back home following the changed political landscape in South Africa. The study argues that the roots and reasons for exiles to leave their homeland had a fundamental impact and determination on how the exiled understood and experienced exile and their ultimate return back home, which “resolved” their exilic condition. The study also seeks to understand how the ideals SOMAFCO intended for its alumni of developing a new South African for a liberated, non-sexist, non-racist, and non-discriminatory society post-apartheid were realised, if at all, through considering how SOMAFCO alumni attended to the post-apartheid developments in South Africa that seem to suggest that the ANC that led the struggle against apartheid has turned its back on the founding aspirations of the Freedom Charter, which continues to be post-apartheid South Africa’s founding statement. This is done alongside a comparison of the notion of education for liberation shared with other liberation movements in the region and in light of the continuous xenophobia exhibited particularly towards African immigrants and refugees in contemporary South Africa.
