The healthcare profession is known for exerting a profound strain on both the physical and mental health of professionals. This study aimed to provide a nuanced understanding of the types of interventions offered to improve the mental health and well-being of healthcare professionals (HCPs), which was guided by responding to one research question, types of existing intervention programmes (IPs) available for HCPs. A scoping review was conducted, by consulting with nine electronic databases (Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, JSTOR, Science Direct, Springer Link, Pubmed, PsycINFO and SABINET African Journals) published between the period 1990 and 2024, yielding 11 studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria. A review of the selected studies, using thematic analysis, brought forth the following key themes: workplace IPs, mental health and well-being support, burnout and stress management strategies and effectiveness of IPs. Prominent gaps emerged, such as limited participation, inadequate long-term measurement of impact, the utilisation of objective measures and lack of diversity in intervention approaches. Using the World Health Organisation’s Healthy Workplace Framework (WHWF) as a guiding lens, this comprehensive review provided an in-depth exploration of interventions offered to HCPs, and the practical impacts and challenges that should be considered to improve the efficacy of such programmes. To close, the study presents important considerations which can inform the development or facilitation of future IPs extended to HCPs.
