This study examines the extent to which a life without sin is possible and necessary according to the New Testament. To this end, the concept of sin is first defined. This is followed by a historical consideration of sin in the Old Testament, which provides the context for understanding it in the New Testament and shows the contrast between what has changed in relation to sin between life without and with the Holy Spirit. A detailed analysis of chapters Romans 6-8 clarifies Paul's view of sin and the Christian life in the Spirit. Galatians 5 examines the contrast between life in the flesh and life in the Spirit. The letters of John offer an additional perspective on the subject of sin and the Christian life. Practical applications and support for Christians who continue to struggle with sin are then dealt from a counselling perspective in the final section. The study shows that the battle against sin can be hard, but the Holy Spirit stands by Christians and helps them to win this battle. Through Christ, believers have been set free, but not free to continue sinning. Rather, this freedom means that Christians have the opportunity to choose obedience to God and turn away from sin.
