This thesis positions the Springbok Legion as a space in the 1940s and 1950s that fostered the amalgamation, renegotiation and reconstitution of colonial conceptions of whiteness, belonging and duty, informed by a wartime South African economy and a turbulent post-war political milieu. Conventional histories reduce the organisational and ideological character of the Legion to either a veteran’s welfare organisation or a front of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA). This thesis shows how the Legion was a space where white liberals and radical activists could embody complimentary and contradictory values in pursuit of the principles of constitutional democracy and nonracialism. The thesis argues that the Springbok Legion incubated social values and identities that transcended the spatial confines of the organisation and proliferated into the larger anti-apartheid struggle. The Legion is posited as a crucial component of the extraparliamentary political environment of the 1950s where nonracialism, as opposed to narrow Africanism, was the most viable political strategy for the Congress Alliance to pursue.
