Work readiness of youth in the school-to-work transition stage is increasingly prominent in policy and practice across disciplines but lacks a clear construct definition in contemporary occupational therapy literature. This impacts assessment and ultimately best practice strategies. Construct definition was undertaken as a preliminary step towards validating a practice tool for profiling work readiness of youth. A multi-method qualitative study aimed at probing work readiness of youth in the school-to-work transition stage as an occupational therapy construct followed literature-guided methodology in combination with two interpretive frameworks, the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, fourth edition (OTPF-4), and the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdTMoCA), to define the construct and its constituents. The first objective examined extant knowledge of the construct using a narrative literature review. Rich information was drawn from a broad range of sources using both inductive and deductive methods, clarifying the core construct and its elements. Semi-structured interviews probed expert occupational therapists' views to address the second objective, contextualising the construct within the current practice setting. The third objective involved operationalising the construct definition within the occupational therapy domain of practice. Three research outputs were produced, each representing the research findings from a distinct but supplementary perspective. The first output presents a definition of the construct as an infographic, highlighting its four interdependent dimensions, which relate to the youth, the family and community, the workplace, and the support team. The second output synthesises elements and indicators of work readiness across the OTPF-4 categories in a schematic summary. The third output displays the developmental manifestation of work readiness elements and indicators across the levels of creative ability of the VdTMoCA in a tabulated summary, indicating how these can be assessed and fostered within therapeutic intervention. The study defined and clarified the multidimensionality of the core construct, along with its elements and indicators, providing a foundation for identifying current needs with regard to assessment and practice tools in occupational therapy. A comprehensive understanding of the construct is also instrumental in consolidating and expanding the existing evidence base. It further supports efficient interprofessional collaboration and service delivery to youth requiring transition support.
