In South Africa, the legacy of Apartheid spatial planning resulted in isolated communities/townships on the periphery of urban centres, far removed from economic and social opportunities and infrastructure. As a result, the majority of the population remains heavily reliant on public transportation that is reliable, affordable, and accessible. Bridging this spatial planning legacy is crucial for enabling an inclusive urban development and equitable access to opportunities. This study sought to explore and analyse the GoGeorge BRT systems contribution to reconfiguring mobility within a secondary city context, through the implementation of the Route 2: Blanco-CBD transit line in George, Western Cape Province (i.e., study area). The study is centred around four objectives: (i) the rationale for implementing the GoGeorge BRT system; (ii) the planning and decision-making processes behind route selection and BRT infrastructure; (iii) analysing commuter perceptions and lived experiences; and (iv) identifying broader lessons for BRT implementation in similar contexts. A two-stage qualitative methodology was used, comprising of stage 1: informal interviews and stage 2: fieldwork observations, where research findings reveal that the GoGeorge BRT exemplifies a people-centred and socially inclusive transit model that effectively links peripheral communities such as Blanco with the George CBD. The research findings reveal that the GoGeorge BRT successfully bridged the spatial inequality gap by implementing a people-centred, alternative inclusive public transport system, effectively linking peripheral communities to the urban core. Four innovative planning principles, amongst others, contribute to its success: (i) deploying smaller Sprinter vans in hard-to-reach areas; (ii) introducing the GoGeorge Child Scheme transit lines for reliable school transport; (iii) designing context-responsive stations tailored to surrounding land uses; and (iv) utilising shared lanes to integrate cost effectively with existing road networks. Overall, the GoGeorge BRT system provides a road map for a sustainable and spatially just alternative to South Africa’s dominant MBT system, offering valuable insights for future transit planning aimed at overcoming spatial inequality.
