The main objective of the study was to test a conceptual model that explains the relationships between workfamily interaction (i.e. work-nonwork interference and work-family enrichment) and specific work-related outcomes (i.e. organisational commitment, job satisfaction and subjective career success). The study contributes by developing a conceptual model, which explains the positive and negative influence of workfamily interaction on work-related outcomes, within the South African context. Motivation for the study: Although the topic is found in international literature, there currently is a significant gap within the South African literature on studies investigating the interaction between work and family life and its relationship with work-related outcomes. Work-family interaction is considered to be a bi-directional concept, however, empirical studies have found that work interfering with the family domain was reported three times more often than interference from the opposite direction, with the focus predominantly on the negative interference between these domains. Nevertheless, theoretically researcher’s understanding of work–family interaction is incomplete without considering the positive aspect (i.e. enrichment) as well. Limited studies have been done in South Africa focusing both on the positive and the negative aspects of work-family interaction and its relationship with work-related outcomes. Research design, approach and method: The present study used a cross-sectional survey design among a sample of permanently employed married parents (n=212). Instruments were administered to measure worknonwork interference, work-family enrichment, job satisfaction, organisational commitment and subjective career success. Statistical analyses included confirmatory factor analyses, descriptive statistics, and correlations statistics for the various instruments, as well as Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to test a conceptual model of work-family interaction with work-related outcomes. Main findings: Hypotheses for the conceptual model were confirmed, explaining the relationships between work-family interaction and work-related outcomes. The results indicated significant relationships between work-family enrichment and the various work-related outcomes. Although significant relationships were found between work-nonwork interference and job satisfaction and commitment, no significant relationship was found with organisational commitment in the SEM model. Practical/Managerial implications: Work-family enrichment was identified as having the most significant influence on work-related outcomes.
