Research unravelling the question of time to completion (TTC) of postgraduate research is increasing. In this study, I examine the factors that both hinder and facilitate the TTC of Industrial and Organisational Psychology (IOP) master’s postgraduate research studies within the South African context. A literature-based TTC model was developed and its applicability to the South African context was determined using two focus groups and three interviews. The focus groups were used to collect data from students who were enrolled at the time in an IOP master’s course at one of three South African public universities. Individuals who had completed their mini-dissertations within the past 14 months of the focus groups were also included. Three interviews with supervising lecturers were conducted to obtain data from a supervisory angle on the possible facilitators and hindrances to TTC. This approach thus offered insights from both angles (student and supervisor) into the real issues hindering TTC and the facilitators who assist in the dissertation progress. Thematic analysis and provisional coding techniques were utilised. Local IOP master’s students share certain commonalities with their global counterparts, which among others include factors involving faculty support, non-academic support (peer and family support and family commitments), the student’s personality, ability and skill, factors specific to the student’s research design and experience, and factors related to the supervisory experience. However, given the unique context of the typical IOP master’s student (full-time employment, mini-dissertation course structure, HPCSA internship requirements and professional registration requirements), it becomes evident that over and above the norm, there are additional factors that pose challenges for the students within the South African context. This study focuses attention on and raises awareness of the real issues behind TTC within the specific context. With TTC issues increasingly posing a threat to institutions (both research-intensive and non-research intensive institutions), such critical insights are offered in order to promote the implementation of certain interventions in the hopes of minimising the completion time of the mini-dissertation.
