Teams have been the focus of much research attention during the last fifty years. Research shows that optimally functioning teams are able to adapt to changing environments and achieve desired results more efficiently than individuals. Team optimisation is often achieved through the implementation of team building interventions. The present study aimed to identify behaviours that are critical within teams and to develop a behavioural framework of team effectiveness in relation to the ‘PotgieterBigFive’ theoretical model. The main purpose was to establish a conceptual nomological network structure of team effective behaviours. This study was exploratory in nature and adds value to the body of research as no previous studies have focused on identifying specific behaviours and their effect on overall team effectiveness. The sample for this study consisted of 28 highly effective teams. A modified version of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method was used to analyse the results. The results of the study suggest that team effectiveness is experienced through six behavioural constructs. The behavioural constructs of collaboration, efficient interaction and optimism were identified as the most predominant behaviours displayed by the teams. The behavioural constructs of compassion, trust and assistance were identified as the least significant behaviours displayed by the teams. On a practical level the nomological network structure of team effectiveness behaviours conceptualised in this study could form the foundation for future research and instrument development.
