Previous research has demonstrated that injury incidence in South African football differs from European professional football. This study aims to determine the eccentric hamstring strength and prevalence of functional ankle instability (FAI), and how they may correlate to injury incidence over one season in a South Africa youth football academy. Sixty-three male youth footballers, ages 14-19 years, selected for the 2017 squad of an elite South African academy are included. A battery of preseason tests were performed: a demographic questionnaire, the Nordic hamstring curl test, the Star excursion balance test and the Cumberland ankle instability tool. The FIFA F-MARC ‘Injury Report Form’ recorded in-season injury data. All participants present with at least one of the components of FAI. The mean values for combined lower limb eccentric hamstring strength and the resultant mean knee joint angle are 328.51N and 21_ respectively. The overall injury incidence was 32.4 injuries per 1 000 exposure-hours, with training injury incidence at 28.4 injuries per 1 000 exposure-hours and match injury incidence at 39.6 per 1 000 exposurehours. The under15’s and Defenders recorded the weakest eccentric hamstring strengths. The under17’s and Midfielders recorded the strongest eccentric hamstring strengths. No correlations exist between eccentric hamstring strength, FAI and lower limb injury incidence. This study is the first of its’ kind in South African football, and an opportunity to develop objective, reliable and economically viable player assessments for football in Africa who don’t have access to sports science testing facilities or financial support.
