In hoofstuk 1 het ek die chronologie van film-en animasietegnieke, asook die werking en soorte animasie aan die hand van voorbeelde bespreek. Kentridge het die bestaande animasieproses geneem en tot sy eie verwerk om by sy individuele behoeftes aan te pas. Hy het sy losstaande houtskool-en-pasteltekeninge kameramatig, opeenvolgend aanmekaargelas. Dele is uitgevee en bygewerk en weer verfilm om sodoende 'n illusie van beweging daar te stel. Hierby het Kentridge byklanke en musiek gevoeg om die visuele te ondersteun. Hierdie tekeninge, wat hy tot film verwerk het, noem Kentridge "Drawings for Projection". In die daaropvolgende ses hoofstukke (hoofstukke 3 tot 8) is die eerste ses films uit hierdie reeks chronologies, elk in 'n aparte hoofstuk, aan die hand van voorbeelde en onderliggende temas, bespreek.
