Afrikaans: Hierdie verhandeling vorm 'n dokument waarin riglyne met betrekking tot die antwerp van grand- en rotsvuldamme (vuldamme) vir Suid-Afrikaanse toestands saamgestel is. Bestaande kennis is gerntegreer en saamgevat. Die riglyne is veral van toepassing op damme tot 'n maksimum hoogte van 30 m. Ontwerpsaspekte wat 'n invloed op die ekonomie, veiligheid en konstruksiepraktyk van 'n vuldam het, word bekend gestel. Die inleidende deel is aan die faktore wat 'n invloed op die antwerp het, stappe tydens die ontwerpproses en 'n ontwerpstrategie gewy. Daarna is moontlike damboumateriale met hul eienskappe en die algemene vuldamsnitte opsommend bespreek. Die noodsaaklikheid en intensiteit van materiaal-ondersoeke en fondamentondersoeke word aangespreek. Ontwerppraktyke en riglyne ten opsigte van die volgende aspekte is ingesluit: • verdigting van grand- en rotsvulmateriale; • deursypelingsbeheer en defensiewe ontwerpsaspekte ten opsigte van lekwater en soliedes deur die wal en fondament; • stabiliteits-, vassakkings- en kraakvormingsbeheer van die wal en fondament; • erosiebeheer ten opsigte van die dele van die wal wat aan die atmosfeer blootgestel is; en • vloedbeheermaatreels vir die kanalisering van vloedwater verby die wal op 'n veilige manier en die bekendstelling van toepaslike vloeduitlope. Dit is bevind dat daar leemtes in sommige velde van vuldamontwerp bestaan en aanbevelings ten opsigte van verdere navorsing word gemaak. Guidelines on the design of earth and rockfill dams (fill dams) for South African conditions are documented in this treatise. Existing knowledge was integrated and summarized. These guidelines are especially applicable to dams up to a maximum height of 30 m. Design aspects related to the economy, safety and construction practice of a fill dam are mentioned. The introductory section describes the factors influencing the design of a dam, the steps to be taken in the design process and a design strategy. Possible dam materials and their characteristics are discussed as well as the typical cross sections used for fill dams. The necessity for detailed material and foundation investigations is highlighted. Design practices and guidelines of the following aspects are included: • compaction of earth and rockfill materials; • seepage control and defensive design aspects with reference to leakage water and solids through the embankment and foundation; • stability, settlement and cracking control of the embankment and foundation; • erosion control of those parts of the embankment exposed to the atmosphere; and • flood control measures for the safe passing of flood water and an indication of applicable spillways. Deficiencies in certain fields of fill dam design are identified and recommendations with reference to further research are made.
