Louw, Daniel UCTD Ouetehuise Suid-Afrikaanse vakliteratuur Verskeie ondersoekers Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 1970. English: The aim of this study is mainly to gain insight into the role and significance of old age homes within the framework of a national policy for the care of the aged and to evaluate the practice of institutional care of the aged in South Africa. Because there is so little South African literature which relates to the problem of ageing and the care of the aged it was thought advisable to tackle this subject on a broad front and approach it from various angles. In order to achieve this a study which deals with the following aspects of the problem is included: (a) Basic knowledge about the social problems of ageing, in other words of social gerontology. (b) The general patterns of care of the aged in other Western countries and insights which have been gained as a result. (c) Developments in the field of institutional care of the aged in South Africa and other Western countries. (d) Data relating to the residents of South African old age homes. The first three aspects of the study are based mainly on data obtained by means of a study of the relevant literature and the last part on data obtained by means of a social survey. This survey made use of a sample of 510 residents of state subsidized old age homes in South Africa. The aim of the survey was mainly to establish the social background and certain general characteristics of residents of old age homes as well as the circumstances giving rise to their admission to old age homes and how they experience life in old age homes.
