This architectural master’s dissertation investigates the transformative potential of timber construction and regenerative architecture in the South African context, with a specific focus on the establishment of the School of Craft in Silverton, Pretoria. The building industry in South Africa is experiencing a shift towards sustainable practices and the adoption of emerging building technologies, driven by the need to address climate change, celebrate cultural identity, and foster innovation. Timber construction, as a versatile and eco-friendly building material, is at the forefront of this transformation. The dissertation investigates the emergence of mass timber construction (MTC), which introduces new technologies, including digital design and CNC machining, to harness the full potential of timber as a structural material. The core theory of regenerative architecture guides the design principles of the School of Craft, emphasising conservation, performance optimization, and a deep understanding of natural and living systems in architectural design. The project integrates green building elements, such as green roofs, water collection and reuse systems, and energy-efficient strategies, to create a sustainable and regenerative learning environment. The School of Craft serves as a hub for timber construction education, offering a comprehensive program that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, catering to both full-time students and professionals in the building industry. The project’s design promotes inclusivity and community engagement, allowing the public to interact with the educational facilities and appreciate the students’ work through exhibitions. The intended outcome of this project is to foster sustainable and regenerative practices in South African architecture, emphasising the importance of designing for disassembly to adapt to evolving needs and times. By merging the traditional art of craftsmanship with innovative timber construction methods and regenerative architectural principles, the School of Craft in Silverton aims to be a catalyst for a more sustainable and harmonious built environment in South Africa. This dissertation contributes to the discourse on timber construction, regenerative architecture, and the future of architectural education in South Africa, offering insights and recommendations for architects, educators, and policymakers interested in advancing sustainable and inclusive design practices.
